@AdrianMole I wouldn't raise a R/A flag on post containing garbage text intended to get around the quality filter, unless the entire question is garbage. The answer to this question covers why. OTOH, there are definitely many users who would like to red-flag such posts, and there's at least one mod who'll mark such flags helpful.

Is it ok to CV-PLS an elderly question one stumbled upon searching for a dupe? The question lacks detail, and the accepted self-answer is pretty awful.

Actually - looking at the tags they chose the "not enough watchers" rule might apply. None of the four tags they picked has more than a 606 watchers ... how many users per tag would we consider "not enough"? cron has 606 ...

Is there a canonical Python question for "What are the rules/constraints for naming the file containing main?" Something like this C++ question, but for Python. I can't seem to find it.

there are no useful rules for that really, the only practical constraint is to avoid characters in the file name which are problematic when you import, like dots and dashes

because this should have been given as comment IMHO. Using an answer option to direct an user to your answer is advertising your own answer with an answer. Would be ok to do within a comment.

@AgainPsychoX I'm going to swap around which of your two answers I deleted. Upon double-checking, and actially reading the questions, your solution is GitHub specific, rather than being a general Markdown solution, as it relies on the CSS which GitHub uses (for example, it doesn't work on SE). Thus, it's not an appropriate answer, at least not as currently written, for the question which is about generic Markdown.

In general, we don't permit identical or near identical answers. In fact, identical answers are automatically flagged for moderator attention. [More in a little bit. Let me swap the deletions around first.]

@AgainPsychoX In general, if you think that a question should be getting answers which are identical or near identical, then they are likely duplicate questions. If they are duplicate questions, then one (or more) should be flagged for closure as, or voted to be closed as, a duplicate question. We don't permit identical, or near-identical, answers on multiple questions.

Substantially more information is in "Is it acceptable to add a duplicate answer to several questions?", which was linked in the comment I left on the answer I originally deleted.

In fact, when the system detects an identical answer, an automatic flag is raised for moderator attention. For those automatic flags, while we do some cursory checking (e.g. for spam/self promotion, excessively posting duplicates, etc.), we tend to just delete the more recent answer and leave the comment I left on the originally deleted answer. We actually have a userscript which does both the deletion and leaving the comment with a single click.

In this case, it would have been better had I deleted the one on the generic Markdown question, rather than the one about GitHub flavored Markdown. This has now been corrected.

While you can do links to another answer of your own, as long as you're including disclosure of affiliation (e.g. if there's substantially more explanation in one answer than the other), if the questions are not appropriate to close as duplicates, then your answer should be tailored to the question on which you post the answer.
