@AdrianMole Looking at that answer, I'd say one custom flag on it with a cursory explanation (e.g., "near duplicate of top answer with 'for the lulz', possible troll? consider deleting") then feel free to toss R/A flags on it if you believe it's definitely a troll. Otherwise, we'll catch the custom flag eventually.

The handling moderator, in this case, elected to delete without flagging R/A, signaling that they were not confident it was a troll. I'd probably have handled it the same way.

Note that while Stack Overflow moderators are fairly consistent with their use of flags vs. deletion, not all mods on the network are. This is not helped by the mod UI strongly suggesting that you should simply delete spam & R/A rather than re-flagging it yourself.

So on other sites, you may see blatant spam or trolling simply mod-deleted.

@TylerH Yes, it was a joke. I thought it was sufficiently clear that there wouldn't be any confusion. The post cannot possibly be deleted, so even if someone thought it was a request, the fact that it was unactionable should have been enough to trigger an "oh!" (And hopefully at least a "hah!") Alas. Not a big deal that you didn't like having it here.

@RyanM It wasn't even announced to mods on other sites that self-flagging did anything special until within the last year. Before that the advice we got was "delete it and destroy the user"

@StephenOstermiller Um... isn't it obvious from the mod tools? I mean, no one "announced" it to me, either, you just kind of know by sniffing around and thinking through it logically...

But yeah, destroying the user has an equivalent effect, so it is not actually necessary to both flag as spam and destroy the user.

Self-flagging has the additional benefit of hiding the post so that you have to click to the revision history.

So that non-mods have to, yeah. But meh?

@dippas That currently has a bounty (and definitely did at the time you posted the request), which means it cannot be closed by anyone. That makes it an invalid request. Feel free to repost after the bounty has expired.

(Normally, you could raise a moderator flag to request removal of a bounty and expedited closure of an off-topic question, but I would not in this case because (A) that's not an obvious enough case that a moderator would step in for expedited closure or bounty removal, and (B) the bounty is almost expired, so it makes no sense to take directed action now.)

Is this question on topic, Is this a malware? It is from oceanofgames.com? It shows some VBScript code, but it's not trying to fix a coding problem but rather asking if the code extracted from a free downloadable game is malware. It looks like "general computing" to me, but I would welcome your thoughts.

It's asking to explain what a particular piece of code does. I would say it's on topic.

A very high-rep user voted to close this question... why would that be off-topic? AFAIK, beginner questions covering fundementals aren't (inherently) off-topic, and we have other 'fundamentals' questions as well. What am I missing that would make it off-topic?

@cocomac If you are referring to the comment, it's not a close reason. But it may be a duplicate perhaps.

@JeanneDark Yep, I meant this comment. I haven't seen the "Does this answer your question?" message, which confused me a bit because that makes me think it was a 'normal' close reason (caused by typos?)

Many/most very basic questions in established programming languages are duplicates. It's just about how to go looking for them.

@Makyen back from dinner... once I had that A translated, I got so upset I just started to hit the button(s)... when I saw it was the "wrong" one, I wrote my chat post above. I'm happy everyone turned RED quickly.

I don't know how it happened. I just wanted to let you know that somehow you used the wrong one, but I assume it was a mistake or that you decided the reason you used was not the best one. Ignore me. This kind of stuff happened to me a couple times too.
