I agree that the current Candidate Score is considerably over-simplified in terms of representing potential ability/suitability to be a moderator; I don't know that much about its origins but I suspect it was an attempt to indicate both the depth and breadth (i.e. variety of different types of action) of involvement/commitment on the site.

... some of the other metrics suggested here may be more helpful, but I'm not 100% convinced of that. Reviews: I think, of all the SO review "top 20" leagues, only three current mods appear: Sam (for his Close Vote drive around a year ago) and Andy and JFF in the LQA queue. Meta: Three or four current mods are highly active, a few others are occasional visitors but I have seldom (never?) seen activity from about half the team.

... It's not necessarily that easy (or possibly even appropriate) to assess candidates' suitability in terms of raw statistics. Often, 'unsung' actions (like taking new users 'aside' into chat to explain things) are more relevant.

Would it be feasible, desirable or appropriate to have an indication of what the existing mod team think of a candidate (in very vague terms, only). If the current team has the overall view, "Yeah, they'd be a great addition," then surely that's a good thing? If they think, "Oh no ... what if they win?" ... eek.

@AdrianMole review is something that most reviewers who get elected stop doing. The unilateral decision is something many mods shy away from in anything but the most clear cases. So I'd not judge reviews of current mods when considering this. What reviewing does do is highlight people's willingness to do somewhat thankless drudgery because they recognize its value.

@AdrianMole while I don't doubt the impartiality of the mod team, this would face the same problem as elections IRL face - endorsement coming from already elected members heavily biases voting patterns in favor of the candidate which we would probably want to avoid if elections are to be fair. Besides, imagine Alice not really liking Bob due to previous interactions or whatnot. Then Bob goes on to be a great mod, but if it was up to Alice, they would not be endorsed during nomination

We've had cases of people who were generally considered problematic change significantly when they get elected (and some don't).

But, IIRC, existing mods do have the ability to veto a candidate (or, at least, ask staff to do so), should they feel really strongly about it.

So... before the voting, we only remove people who are not allowed to participate for some reason. If someone nominated who the mods are particularly concerned about winning, and they do win, we may pause awarding a diamond until we have a chance to talk to the candidate.

Has the number of mods to be elected this time around been announced yet?

Hmm. Any Pythonistas about who'd care to comment on whether this should be used as a "known bad" audit in the Reopen Votes queue? (I opened it up in a new window but still didn't spot that it was an audit. Not saying it should be reopened, just asking if it's really that obvious that it shouldn't be. Seems like quite a 'subjective' decision, to me, and it has a reasonable answer.)

@AdrianMole It doesn't look "known bad" to me. It's not a great question, and it's probably a dupe, but not a shoot on sight close vote I would have thought. Looks like it was closed because the OP couldn't really express the background in the comments.

@AdrianMole I would look whose answer they copied, and if they have further answers and perhaps copied those, too. Sometimes there can be strange coincidences like copying from the same user, receiving upvotes until they can upvote themselves and then making use of their new privilege, while their "target" receives a lot of upvotes. Purely hypothetical example, for sure.

@Vickel I appreciate that you learned that from me. Fortunately, the default behavior for edits and the reopen queue was changed in the most recent update to the review queues. In order to put the question into the reopen queue as the result of an edit, there's now a checkbox which the editor has to click on in order to indicate that the edit resolves the reasons for the question being closed.

@Vickel np. Thanks for updating. Unfortunately, following the advent of that feature was a bit frustrating, as they announced it, but then did a couple/few updates to the review queues prior to actually implementing it. Adding it was part of their bug-ridden "final" update.

@VLAZ Using "seniors" as a general appellation seems to be a cultural thing. I haven't determined if there's a geographical region where it's more common to use that appellation, but it could be as narrow as per-company or per-school. It's certainly something I recognize as meaning "people more knowledgeable than me", but it's not something I'd commonly use.
