Hi, I'm turning to those who are skilled in the dark arts of closing questions, in hopes of some guidance as to why my question suffered the ignominy of being closed: stackoverflow.com/questions/68594271/….

There are no comments as to what people found wrong, and it is a very similar question in form and scope to stackoverflow.com/questions/36730549/…, which has 123 upvotes.

There's a generic sounding private feedback: "We don’t allow questions about general computing hardware and software on Stack Overflow. You can edit the question so it’s on-topic for Stack Overflow or post a new one on Super User." However, that seems to have missed the mark since the question is specifically about an edge case in macOS filesystem permissions, possibly occurring only on macOS Big Sur (since I can repeat the problem on both my macs).

I'm at a loss where to turn for advice, and so I thought to try here. Lemme know if this is the wrong spot!

@KennSebesta Sadly, questions asked before are a poor indication of what's on topic now. It wasn't on topic when it was asked, the same way your isn't.

@KennSebesta That you're using a command line interface doesn't make the question a programming question. Such questions are considered general computing, unless they fall into other categories of programing related questions listed on Stack Overflow's on-topic page in the Help Center.

Overall, there are probably multiple Stack Exchange sites on which a question such as yours is likely to be on-topic. You could probably try one of Ask Different, Unix & Linux, Super User, etc. However, be sure to read the site's on-topic page prior to posting your question. Note that my listing the above sites is not saying that your question is definitely on-topic on any of those sites, as I do not routinely contribute to any of them.

@Makyen That's a distinction I've not seen applied before, but it's a good and helpful one. Is it new-ish, or is it honored more in the breach than in the observation?

@KennSebesta It depends on what you consider "new". Like a lot of things, it's not a distinction which was made when Stack Overflow first came into existence. I'd have to research when that particular distinction was first adopted, but it was a relatively gradual process of refining Stack Overflow's focus as the Stack Exchange Network has grown over the years.

At this point, Stack Overflow is fairly strictly for programming related questions, as described in Stack Overflow's on-topic page in the Help Center. While command line interfaces are something which programmers do tend to use, they are also used by a wide spectrum of other Information Technology fields.

@sideshowbarker I'm not sure how that's spam. The first link is just to code, and is mentioned in the question. The second link is to a different SO question. The third link is to geeksforgeeks.org, which is linked in >10k SE posts. At least a cursory glance doesn't indicate the user is affiliated with that third linked page. I'm not thrilled with the last line asking for upvotes, but that doesn't seem to rise to the level of being spam. What am I missing?

@JeanneDark Sorry, voted Needs Details or Clarity. I read the question three times and it didn't make any sense. It's asking for a GUI making application which runs from the command line and doesn't have many fancy graphical features. And runs on all OSes but it's also very simple. Seems contradictory.

Is this link-only? It seems to be an obvious one, but the question asks "Is there an any way to install without root?" and that answer might be seen as saying yes (implicitly).

@AdrianMole I think it's on-topic. The author might have meant something different there. Maybe the meaning got mangled during editing. But we can answer whether the sentence is correct or not given the context.

No, I didn't. I'm not sure flagging is so useful. I flagged in the past and they were marked helpful but it also took some time until they were processed. You also can't write as much as you probably should with the character limit (links take up so much space).

@JeanneDark Ok I did. Just didn't want to clutter the mods unnecessarily. I just wrote it's an obvious bad review with a link to the review page... The user should at least be aware of that...

Flagging is okay (see Are we supposed to flag bad reviews?) but oftentimes I only check the timeline after I flagged eg. as NAA, or I flagged long before the review.

In my opinion, there should be an easier way to make mods aware of bad reviews. Instead you can now get infinitely many gold badges for reviewing.

The question How to Find & Add Nofollow Links to Your Website was posted and quickly deleted by the post author. The author’s profile page looks quite spammy. Is this something useful for you? E.g. is there a chance the OP will edit spam into the post and undelete it sometime later; something Smokey can watch?

Well I edited it... There was just an irrelevant note about the answer and an irrelevant tag. It is still just asking for an offsite resource... Am I wrong?

@Tomerikoo If it's edited to "What are the stop words in Hebrew" it wouldn't be asking for off-site resources.

I'd personally still think it's close-worthy but can't put down an exact reason. Perhaps "Needs focus". Or just custom.

@VLAZ It's at its core a linguist question, not a programming question. If the user wants to know stop words on a specific language, it should ask someone that studies said language, not programmers.

AFAIK, stop words are a programming thing. They are the words we don't want to process. Searching for "the word" in Google would be quite ineffectual if it unioned the searches for both terms.

I have an argument with a mod in another SE site about conflict of interest - they declined two flags on their own comments (one being U/U) themselves. I opened a post in the respective meta asking about any code of conduct on such conflicts of interest. Another mod replied referencing this MSE thread, but ultimately referring to it as "sort of an unofficial rule" and "more so as a rule of thumb than as a hard rule".

Can anyone shed any extra light here? Are such MSE posts just unofficial rules? I noticed that the top-voted response in that MSE thread is from someone who, at the time, was Director of Community Development; does this add any extra weight in his response?

@VLAZ It's not NLP, because it's basically following the grammar of the language

You need to identify which words are stop words (and in which context) to then start tokenization. The first step is something a programmer isn't able to do effectively since its not supposed to know what the string of character mean, just that they match the rules.

I was trying to discover why one of my very basic answers was getting an unsolicited spike in upvotes last week. Now I see why: stackoverflow.blog/2021/07/27/… ...I've never had a wave of uv's like that. Usually I only suffer dv's from the meta-effect.

@desertnaut mods can do everything they want. Depending on the site it might be abuse of power or simple incompetence. (I've seen mods who having years of experience probably never read an MSE thread). We get a wrong idea of knowledgeable/experienced mods here on SO, because on other sites they might not know or care about what they're doing.

@VLAZ well depends, does the question have some concrete programming problem like: "how to handle stop words using nltk?" Because if it's just NLP theoretical without a concrete programming language/framework go right ahead and close it. That type of question is doomed to have dozens of useless unfocused solutions.

@VLAZ if otoh it says, "can this NLP problem be solved using this algorithm?" That is still borderline on-topic and the algorithm dispenses showing a concrete implementation.

@desertnaut the "sort of unofficial rule" is not entirely without reason. Other sites might just have 1, 2 or 3 mods with half of them logging in 5 minutes every week. So if the rule were enforced it would render the 1 active mod unable to work. (Which results in flags just aging away.) The MSE example is noteworthy, flags on old posts (and edits) aren't welcome because they cause work. Meaning that curating older content depends on the mods good will.

(Implicit rule being you only curate stuff that's been bumped to the main page. And off course, that notion is mind boggling to regular SO curators.)
