@Makyen: I know that I'm not supposed to bug site moderators in here, but I have a question -- why did you undelete two recent answers that I flagged, and then immediately re-delete and lock them? Just curious.

@HovercraftFullOfEels I assume that you mean the plagiarized ones which each included a shortened URL which appears to be a spam link? I did so, in order to delete them as spam and prevent the user from undeleting them.

@Makyen: ah, I see; thank you for replying. I did not click on the links and so did not recognize them as spam links. That was a lot of effort expended just for that purpose.

@HovercraftFullOfEels It was a bit of effort, but not all that much. For one answer, the OP just copy & pasted it from another site. For the other answer they took a screenshot of someone else's answer. Then, for both, they added a line of text to include the shortened URL.

Once I determined what they were, undeleting and re-deleting as spam was a single click for each, using a couple of userscripts. Finding the plagiarism was a highlight and context menu click for a search, then add quotes, which lead directly to the source. The one which was a screenshot was a bit more work, as I had to type a line of text in order to search for it.

The thing that took the most time was customizing the communication to the user, but most of that was just stock text, which I'd already customized to be generally applicable.

@HovercraftFullOfEels The shortened URLs did take a bit more time, but I dropped those into the browser profile I keep active in order to test suspect URLs. Admittedly, I didn't actually go to the sites. I used a service, URL2PNG, which returns an image of the destination. I also plugged the shortened URL into another service, [getlinkinfo](getlinkinfo.com), which normally returns the destination URL from such link shorteners.

The particular URL shortener which they are using is a bit more of a pain than most, in that it wants you to solve a captcha in order to get to the destination, so those services were not as effective as they usually are.

@HovercraftFullOfEels I appreciate the flags you raised. Thank you for finding the sources for the plagiarism. Unfortunately, I didn't actually see your flags until now. Normally, I would have seen the flags when visiting the post or working the flag queue/dashboard. Having the sources already in the flags would have been very helpful/critical for a plagiarism flag.

In this case, I saw the posts via the SmokeDetector reports. I went directly to the user's profile pages and did everything from there. For viewing the posts, I used a userscript. Unfortunately, that userscript doesn't, yet, show what flags are on the post when the post is viewed, so I wasn't aware of your flags at that time.

I need to put some more work into that userscript, so that the flags are shown, as seeing the ones you raised would have saved time and effort I ended up spending duplicating the work you'd already done. Changing the userscript so that's possible to see the flags is fairly high on the to-do list for that script, as it would certainly help to have that information.

@Vega hmm, I know there had been drama a few years back where users that linked to their repo on github to support their answer got red flagged causing -100 for users that were in good standing. Linking to your own api is borderline I admit so I understand your reasoning. If it's locked, the answer is no (not including comment locks). Locks prevent any type of voting on a post, including deletion

@TylerH Actually, applying a lock would have been more buttons, as I would have had to also specify a length of time. :) Alternately, I could have just undeleted and re-deleted as a moderator, which would have prevent the user from undeleting, but wouldn't have locked it (i.e. they could have edited it). Doing that would have been the same number of clicks. :;

@TylerH How many depends. Mod-locks include the need to specify the timeframe for which the lock applies. How many additional clicks and/or keyboard interactions are needed will depend on which one is used, if the timeframe is the one selected as default for that lock, and/or the use of userscripts, which still need to enter a timeframe, or use an assumed timeframe (for some lock types).

Though most mod locks that are applied on the site are probably 24 hours, I am guessing, not permanent locks

the only permanent lock I can think of that would be worthwhile (as opposed to deleting content) would be historical lock, so I'm sure that is a minority use of the power

seems like that'd be an easy scenario for just-in-time notification to the user informing them that deleting their question to repost it is counter-productive to their ability to continue participating

If an OP gets downvoted on the original revision of a post and makes a substantial edit, which includes some code syntaxed content (beyond a couple words put between the ` tags) maybe those downvotes should get refunded to the voters who can then vote again if they want... maybe a soft notification of some kind so they can track which questions had their downvotes refunded
