Was I wrong to vote to close this question? Is there a way to do SEO with canvas? It has at least two reopen votes, but it still looks like, How can I do SEO with <canvas> to me.

(It also would seem to need more focus as OP asks, Is there any replacement for semantic tag and schema?)

I did. There's both an on-site dup and an off-site dup. But standards have changed in the half-decade since the on-site dup was written, so are questions like How can I do SEO with <canvas> still on topic?

The important thing is that you don't disclose how you voted: that's nobody's business but your own. It's obviously fine to give constructive criticism about a post.

@KenWhite Might want to review that close reason... They're asking how to do this with VBA, which makes it a programming question. I agree that it isn't as clear as it could be, though, and could do with an edit. But it isn't general computing.

@S.S.Anne Yes, because most comments that get flagged as "harassment" aren't actually harassment... The answer you identified would have been perfectly valid flagged as "rude/abusive". The principle case where you should not use a R/A flag is when you (or someone else) could easily edit the answer to remove the "rude/abusive" phrasing, leaving a valid answer. If the answer is irredeemably rude/abusive, like that one was, then flag away.

@CodyGray "Can this be done in VBA?* IMO doesn't make it a programming question, any more than asking Can anyone recommend a restaurant next to Google's HQ? I work there and write javascript and adding a tag for a DBMS or programming language does. :-) I'm fine with any other close reason for that particular question, though.

I don't really follow the logic. In particular, I think the analogy is specious. Recommending a restaurant is clearly unrelated to programming, regardless of whether or not you work at a software company. However, VBA is a programming language, so using VBA makes your question programming-related.

@CodyGray OK. As I said, I'm fine with any other reason for closing that particular question. I don't agree that mentioning a programming language in the post makes it programming related, but I'll keep it in mind for future reference.

@KenWhite It can still be a very bad question, but I don't see how it fails to make it programming related. If I say, "I want to interface with my printer. How can I print a document in C++?", then that's both a very bad question and a programming question. There can be overlap between the two groups. And often is. :-)

Maybe I'm being pedantic about the choice of close reason. But general computing is one of the few close reasons that is still informative to the asker, quite unlike the "your question is too broad because it contains too few details and unclear because it contains an insufficient amount of details" cornucopia of reasons.

I flagged a comment as R/A once that said "Go away from this world!" and it was declined.

@S.S.Anne It's likely there was some other context surrounding that comment that you're omitting or failed to notice.

Unless it was other comments, that was its entirety. I don't remember being disrespectful to the person; all I did was edit their question.

So, like, for example, the question said, "This is an entirely new world that I'm entering, so I am..." and the comment was a reply to that. Out of context, it might seem rude. In context, it was relevant and perhaps even humorous: a new take on a "don't do that!" comment.

Naturally, though, if it was directed at an editor telling them "go away", then it would definitely be rude and should have been deleted.

No, definitely not. It was probably akin to saying "Go kill yourself!" but apparently the mod that reviewed it didn't take it that way.

Anyone know how to recover data from truncated/corrupted qcow2 files? I've been using grep but it's extremely inefficient.

I don't even know what qcow2 files are. Maybe don't let cows get access to your files in the future?

QEMU Copy-On-Write image. It's used for the container that I use but the container crashed and corrupted the image when I ran out of space.

That seems like a bug in QEMU. A crashed container shouldn't be corrupting its own image.

It's a widely-used format and it's not QEMU that my container software uses. It's a known bug but for the short-term I just want my data.

It's all text? Or you're grepping patterns in binary? I don't know how else you would recover this. Surely you could write an application that would do it for you, but I don't see why that would be any more efficient than grep.

I use grep -a on it with text patterns and manually copy-paste the stuff I need.

@S.S.Anne It's going to depend on what the data is that you want to recover. That you're using grep makes it likely that you're looking for text, but it could be raw data. When there hasn't been something available open source, I've generally just written code to recover what's needed. I haven't actually dealt with qcow2 files, but it's usually a trade-off as to how much time it will take to write code to recover vs. regenerating the data.

I wrote an emulator I hadn't put to version control yet and writing a program will be tedious (especially with possible compression)

Unless there's something already written to do the recovery, it's going to be tedious almost any way you do it.

I usually just rewrite whatever code or text that I lost. It's easier that way than trying to recover it. :-)

What an odd world...

What to do really is a trade-off between how much time to recover and probability of success vs. time that it would take to regenerate whatever was lost. We don't have enough data to come close to making suggestions wrt. that choice.

In some cases, I've had acceptable success by opening the raw archive file in an appropriate editor (either a text editor or binary editor, or both). That has usually allowed grabbing larger chunks than are easily displayed with grep, but it really depends on what you're trying to find.

However, you've said you were using compression. That makes it significantly harder. Usually it's best to first decompress as much as possible. There will likely be some losses due to the corruption just in decompressing. How much those losses will be will depend on the algorithm/methodology used for compression/storage.

Hopefully you know this, but just in case you don't: make a copy of the corrupted file prior to doing anything with it. Only work with the copy when attempting to recover. If it might have previously been using other blocks on the drive, then make a copy of the drive and use the copy for recovery in case you need to look through free blocks or blocks allocated to other files.
