@Scratte are you on a shared IP? I don't recall I ever had a not a robot captcha, in normal operation that is. When I'm bored I do visit stackoverflow.com/captcha
@Dharman I am not sure what you mean with "content dispute" Original question was closed as unreproducible (temporary glitch with online service) it does not hold any long term values. But before it can be removed, all its duplicates must be removed first.
Information request by a dummy: When "Yaakov" says his email is "Yaakov@..." is the part after the @ (a) "stackoverflow.com" (b) "stackoverflow.email" or (c) something else?

@S.S.Anne It's not in source control (that's another fun issue). In reality, I know that something must have changed; code doesn't just 'stop working'. It's just frustrating because I think I know exactly what changed, and it shouldn't be causing the issue. I ran it in the test env, made an atomic change, it broke, undid the change, and it didn't unbreak.
@Machavity I mean we can edit the link out if it is an eyesore, but what is undisclosed about it? They signed their message with a link unaware that this is not allowed. Only 2 posts across the network does not make it spam. Just being unaware of the rules.
A follow-up question; I found out that questions that are protected and closed are likely to be blatantly off-topic (attracting bad answers and therefore getting protected). And after a while getting closed. Is that a good criterion to find post that should be deleted (obviously not blindly deleting all of them)?
I might use that factor in a decision, but I'd also look at incoming votes. If the post is being continually upvoted, we can say it's generating traffic to the site, which is something we want.

Ask yourself why should the post be deleted now? Does it harm the site? Does it contain misleading information? Is it just noise/trash that nobody will ever find helpful?
Just for info, regarding my earlier email address question - both ..@stackoverflow.com and ..@stackoverflow.email worked! I don't have the heart to test out the other options proffered, as Yaakov already got my email twice got my email twice.
@M-- it depends. If the view count is low, it's likely that deletion is appropriate. However, if the viewcount/score is high, or there are stellar answers, then it may be a candidate for historical lock.
Historically, mods have waited until a question has undergone some delete-votes or lots of close/reopen or delete/undelete swaps before considering a historical lock, but these days they are a little quicker to pre-empt that back-and-forth with one.
@Dharman Most of the time a question should be deleted now because it should have been deleted long ago, and it only still exists because enough people w/ delete votes haven't passed by yet.
There's no reason not to delete an older question if it deserves deletion, other than we as non-moderators have a limited number of delete votes per day (or none if we're below 10K). So it's left up to the discretion of each individual how they want to cast those.
@AdrianMole I'm not sure what you mean. Since I joined Stack Overflow, as far as I know, there has not been a delete vote review queue, only the 10k tools page.
I think there used to be the ability (no review queue though) for any user with enough rep to unilaterally delete or close a question, but it only lasted a few months
because Jeff realized it would be too abused w/ no oversight
Note that I didn't get 10k reputation until, what, 2018? Late 2017? So I was a few years into my time here when I even got to see deleted content and cast delete votes.
Is it worth suggesting a "have you checked these" quick reference links in tag info? E.g. for PHP, would have all the common dupe targets - though I guess that only works if people read the info haha :)
@M-- same error message cited, same problem description. The only differences are that the OP added some tags and re-worded in a way that just could have been done by and edit/update to the first question
@NathanOliver OK but as far as closing the new one, what close reason can I use? Choosing “Duplicate” doesn’t work unless the question I’m marking it as a duplicate of is one that has at least one upvoted answer, right?
@sideshowbarker Well if you're sure, you can close the old one (seems that the new one is better) as NathanOliver suggested. I am not sure if we (us, ordinary users :D) are allowed to make edits and bring information from one to another (sort of merging), but if we are allowed, is not a bad idea to do that as well.

What really astonishes me is the lengths people will go to to avoid pressing Ctrl+C. It takes at least ten times more effort to take, crop, and upload a screenshot than it does to just copy-paste.
Cmd+Shift+4 on the Mac does make it easier. On stupid Windows, I either have to crop manually or use the stupid Snipping Tool, which now has a stupid message that it’s being replaced with another stupid tool that has an even more confusing (and stupid) interface.
@Dharman I see. Probably an update I haven’t installed yet. Not to mention there’s no clear list of new features added, so nothing is discoverable. Does it work just like Cmd+Shift+4 has on the Mac since, oh, System 7?

Apple also has a nice feature where you can capture an entire window, complete with drop shadow, without having to draw a perfect rectangle around it. Just use the spacebar. Maybe Windows will have that, too, in another 20 years.
@NathanOliver You’re doing it wrong. Nobody uses the buttons. Did you know there are keyboard shortcuts? Also, it’s Markdown. It’s literally easier to type the formatting symbols than it is to click buttons.

@M-- Yes, I’d say that is reasonable. Even encouraged. Port the new information back into the original question. It should have been an edit anyway, not posted as a new question.
When do we get a tabbed Explorer? I saw some screenshots of that a while back, but no release yet.
I just installed the Windows Terminal preview because it lets me have tabbed console windows. That’s literally the only feature I care about. But at least it does that well. Looking forward to playing with that on a Win 10 laptop. But in my opinion having to edit a JSON settings file is a major regression. Took me almost an hour to figure out how to configure the darn thing.
The Finder has had this for years. It also has column view, which is fantastic, and a lovely Details view with flippy triangles. I want flippy triangles in explorer, too.
What could be more natural for a programmer than using a TreeView to navigate their file system?
That would even help reduce the need for tabs, as you can effectively have multiple folders expanded at once to see their contents and move back and forth between them.
I drag in all of Boost just to use the PropertyTree module. I literally don’t need anything else from Boost, but I do need a sane, usable settings file.
Well there was Skyrim, the DLC, Skyrim Legendary Edition, Skyrim Anthology, Skyrim Special Edition, Skyrim VR, then of course all the separate console releases

@CodyGray I was looking at the timeline for WinForm answer of yours which you once mentioned here. The pattern downvotes through the past couple of years is amazing. It looks like someone creates a new account every couple weeks or so, brings its rep to ~125, downvotes your answer and moves on to creating another account and the cycle goes on :)))) Getting a downvote or two almost every month it's so harmonious, beyond normal
(I am not actually suggesting that this is what's happening, I am just surprised that a well formatted answer, even if it says something different than what OP is asking gets that much negative feedback)

I’d rather have the downvotes than the hate mail and the threats.
It’s entirely possible though that those downvotes are just from new users coming across the Q&A. Winforms is increasingly becoming obsolete and development on it is being dumped on the lower tier programmers who don’t question requirements or do any thinking for themselves, and thus are the least likely to find that answer helpful.
What is too often missed is that part of your job as a programmer is to be an expert. If something should not be done because it’s user-hostile, or if it takes 10 times as long to build it one way versus another way, then your job is to explain that to the client in a way that they can understand.
Obviously if the client insists, then you might have to do it. I get that. But too many people never push back and operate like the domain experts they should be. The client doesn’t know everything there is to know about software development. If they did, they wouldn’t need to hire you.
@CodyGray oh brother tell me about it. You know what's worse? when your boss and not even the client asks for some stupid\useless\buggy feature to be added. Sometimes I think with myself, am I gonna end up being like some of these guys after 20 years?

@dippas Speaking of comments, please don’t leave comments telling people what not to answer. They never come across well, regardless of your intent, and policing what other users choose to answer isn’t really even your job. Stick with moderating the questions.
It’s worth pointing out that if someone answers low-quality questions that are soon deleted, their answers get deleted, too, along with any rep they might have gained. So the system already solves this problem.
@CodyGray I don't think that it's wrong to explain downvotes as long as it's done constructively. If it's phrased harshly ("downvote for a stupid title!") It's counterproductive because it'll make the OP defensive instead of encouraging them to improve the question.
