@Vickel But a lot of those users don't have an "Informed" badge. I noticed a correlation between the missing badge and the missing green check. So if it's a homework Question that no one else will ever benefit from.. it's hardly worth the debugging help.

@tabdiukov As far as I know, there's no way for an edit suggestion to be retracted. You can change what is suggested by editing the post again. I'm unsure if submitting a re-edit which results in exactly the same text as the post was prior to the edit will result in the edit being retracted. The only thing we can do is reject the edit.

@Vega this doesn't work as soon as there's either more than one answer, or in case of a single answer that has an upvote (even -10/+1). Thus: self-deleting a question works only if there are no answers, or only 1 without any upvotes. (And not accepted, but OP can of course unaccept themselves)

@Georgy I am all for deleting stuff, but I really think there's much worse duplicates that need deleting. This one maybe doesn't add anything new, but is is a nicely written question, which would direct more traffic to the target. It would be a different thing if the answers were wrong.

@Makyen That's not quite accurate. The second part should have been "closed and a score < -2". Open questions can't be delete-voted. It wasn't my intent to imply that they could be, but my earlier message wasn't clear.

@AmitJoshi No, it doesn't matter. The number of delete-votes required to delete will depend on the Q&A scores, the number of views, etc. The number of delete-votes required will be between 3 – 10.

@AndrasDeak Again, we might have conflicting views here. I don't mind the duplicates as long as they suggest the correct solution. In fact I would want more good duplicates to drown the bad ones, which I can't remove. I don't see anything wrong with providing the same answer over and over again (I do it in mysqli). If it means that someone will find one of my good answers rather than the thousands of bad ones I consider it a win.

Don't delete just to delete, have a very good reason to delete justifying why this particular Q&A is not going to be helpful to future visitors.

I don't have gold badge and the ones that do don't close all the questions. Many of them get answered either way. If I see a bad answer I might answer it just to provide a better alternative.

Of course when it gets closed it's fine. If the duplicate has only bad answers then nothing is lost when deleting, but when it has good answers why delete it? There's a proper answer and a link an even better post, so the it's only positives and no negatives. If you do it only to hurt other users that's an abuse of your privileges.

if the answers are more or less the same, I see no benefit in it being kept - for me, all dupes should go to one place. Any answers not there that could be applicable should be added as new answers on the dupe target rather than the dupe... but I guess that has an effect on searchability?

@Dharman we maintain a high signal-to-noise ratio on the site. Don't you think that dozens of legit dupes to common problems make it harder to find solutions to less common problems? Whenever I'm googling for some programming problem (which usually isn't trivial) I have to wade through pages of "how can I do [similar but unrelated perfectly straightforward thing]?". That's partly the consequence of enabling umpteenth dupe on the principle of "it doesn't harm anyone".

Look I google a an error message in a tag I am SME. Google gives me 5 SO questions. None of them have good answers. What do I do? I answer them. Now the next person who googles the same thing and opens any one of them will see one of my good answers. It makes it easier to find the stuff you are supposed to find

I never said that the knowledge repository in my ideal SO can't be structured and well-explained. It just shouldn't be redundant.

The fact that a lot of power-users expect no real effort from askers is what has led to these high expectations of having to teach people who don't want to learn on their own. This is terrible for the site, and explains a large part of the low-quality Programming 101 crap on the front page.

I also find it useful that there are multiple questions on the same topic. The difference in questions also makes it easier to grasp or to apply to a similar problem.

I've run into people thinking that a fly, flying in a car isn't doing the speed of the car plus the speed they are flying because a fly can't fly 70mph (yes, freedom units used)

They can't grasp that drag only works when the air your are in is not moving with you

I'd say 90% of code changes are bad edits. Either they want to fix something or "do it better" neither of which is appropriate for edits

The PIL library has no documentation on PyPi, and I didn't feel like downloading the library to find out how to use it, as it hasn't been updated since 2006 and is only compatible with Python <=2.6, which makes learning about a dead end. Thus, I didn't feel like taking the effort to see if the edit actually fixed things, or made them worse.

Either way, it should have been a comment or a new answer.

@Makyen However, it looks like my reject didn't matter, as it had already been rejected by two users and had an "Edit" review action. Interesting.

@RiggsFolly Ahhh... "Needs Details Or Clarity (No Roomba: reopen vote)" doesn't really look like a reason to reopen a question.

@Dharman I'm not surprised. Those pick up the reasons for closing and/or delete-voting. The reason field isn't cleared when you change the request type, under the assumption that the user may have edited it, or that some of the text might be usable. Reopen votes have no reason associated with them, so there's nothing for the script to pick up.

Admittedly, the script could, potentially, provide a more accurate reason for reopen-pls, if the user hasn't yet edited the request reason. The intent is that you will edit the request reason to be why you are making the specific request which you're posting. The default reasons are intended to have human oversight.

@tink Did this combination previously work? Violentmonkey was updated on 2020-02-13, so I'm interested in if it was functional prior to that.

The overall issue appears to be a conflict between the jQuery which is loaded for the userscript and what's in the page. In theory, this shouldn't happen, because they should be in different contexts, due to the options selected in the script (at least per GM and TM docs, which VM was, in theory, compatible with), but clearly that's not the case at this point. I'll need to investigate the best way to resolve this.

I find the documentation on Int32 somewhat confusing though "You can declare an Int32 variable and assign it a literal integer value that is within the range of the Int32 data type. I’m not sure what it means. That is outside of my expertise, and I’m unable to make sense of the answer. I don’t know if someone more familiar with the subject could improve that answer to make it more generally useful to address a common point of confusion. Either way, I’m not especially inclined to refund a bounty because they’ve solved their own problem, though.

I just noticed an account that posted 5 lightly-rewritten spam posts in about half an hour. I flagged the first four as spam; was it reasonable to mod-flag the fifth complaining about the number of spam posts from the account?

It might be unneeded but can't see it being declined and it's nice to have a fail safe in case the account hasn't already been nuked

@dbc if those 4 got removed while red flagged there is not much more a mod can do except nuke the account.

@dbc The custom flag is a good idea. It isn’t always obvious to mods that there is a larger pattern to the spam, as we handle each one in isolation. Our eye views are limited.

The thing is that each specific post might barely be considered an answer. They all look something like, An easier solution may be to use an XXX modal window. Take a look at XXX.com. I just migrated a clients 84 window desktop application to the web with XXX. Windows can be displayed as tabbed, cascade or stacked by user selection. Only when looking at all 5 is the spamminess unquestionable.

The trade off here is the following: On the one hand, custom moderator flags are more difficult to handle and aren’t sorted/prioritized, so when it’s glaringly obvious what the problems are with the post, we’d prefer you use a standard flag.

On the other hand, we handle flags quickly and may not have all the context or relevant expertise you have, so if there’s more information that you can provide us to make our decision easier, we welcome it. That means, of course, you need to raise a custom flag.

Fun day today. Had emails start failing from a test webserver; our security team decided to mark emails with our domain and TLD as phishing attempts and block them and said "oh you have to replace the organization.org part with our local domain (org.local) to make it work"

@CodyGray the web server itself is not technically sending any, but it is generating it as the source, and sending it through our mailrelay server

It's not cheating at all! It's given on the 'new' site so you get the 'low level' privileges (you'll start off with 101 rep, so you can comment, up-vote, chat, flag, etc.). You've 'earned' those rights on one site, so you're trusted with them on the new one.

If you're primary site is SO then, yes, you'll get +100 here ... whatever new privileges that may give you. If you're on 901, you'll get the "1000" stuff (see up/down vote counts is useful).

When I'm on the MSE site (only 850 rep.) I often forget that I can't see these .

Actually, I created them via "Smokey" links to spam posts - you get sent to the site and are asked to "Confirm the new account." When you do (and link it to your primary), you can then raise flags (for spam, etc.) ... and that helps everyone.

@Scratte True. That query has mostly been used by Charcoal members to create accounts with the intent of flagging spam/R/A posts.

@LittleBowsette The "contact us" link is not meant to reach moderators. Its purpose is to allow you to send a message to Stack Exchange employees, who can overrule community moderators if they disagree with their decision.
