@Makyen sigh I must admit that there are times when I'd really like the edit window on chat messages to be the same length as it is for comments on posts. There are times when composing/rereading what I write that my eyes just gloss over obvious errors (e.g. like "my several" instead of "by several"). Sometimes it takes not looking at it for a minute or two in order to read it fresh to see such things. Unfortunately, by the time that happens, the edit window on chat messages has expired.

@tink In general, most GMTC questions are "too broad", as @StephenKennedy mentioned. For that specific question, it's unclear to me what they are really asking, based on the contents of the question. I could read that question as "unclear", "too broad", or "no MCVE", depending on what they are really wanting.

I would note, however, that some of the things people feel are GMTC really aren't "too broad". Asking how to do some narrowly defined task is on-topic, even if the user hasn't made any attempt and shows no code. In fact, some of the most useful questions on SO are "how do I do X", when X is some very narrowly defined task that's reusable across a variety of circumstances.

Technically, "too broad" is supposed to be that a comprehensive answer would require more than what can be put in a SO answer. It can also be that the asker has left out enough detail to constrain the problem to something manageable, even if they didn't know they needed to state assumptions and conditions.

Personally, I'll often consider things too broad when they're asking for a combination of multiple things (e.g. "I want to do foo, then bar and baz"), unless those are very narrow and closely coupled. To a large extent, I look at this from the point of view of what will be useful to others in the future. Individual questions of "how do I do foo", "how do I do bar", and "how do I do baz" are usually/often helpful to future visitors.

Even a question that is "I know how to do foo, bar, and baz. How do I combine them" is potentially useful, because people could learn from just the process of combining other things. [Breaking down problems into smaller solvable parts and how to combine solutions to those parts is a very important, even critical, skill.]

But, a question that just directly asks "I want to do foo, then bar and baz" really isn't helpful to other people, because it's unlikely that other people are going to want to do exactly that combination of things. It's also likely not stating a considerable volume of assumptions about what is desire and how it's supposed to happen.

So, in the case of above guy who complained about rstring not doing the right thing when he had no idea what it actually does .... and then stating what his desired result is ... what to do with that?

@tink What the OP is asking needs to be in the question. From the question, it's not clear to me what they are really asking, and what they are asking appears to change in the comments. You can recommend to the OP that they [edit] their question to actually ask what they want an answer to. As to the question as to why rstrip isn't working as expected, there's an answer in the comments, but there's not enough information in the question for us to know if it's correct (it probably is).

@tink To me, it's "unclear" rather than "too broad". If the question was clear, then it might be considered "too broad". It could be looked at as "too broad", because there's no way for us to know what's at the end of the file which is preventing rstrip from removing the characters listed in the string provided to it. However, a terminating \n, or \r\n, is the most likely. OTOH, I'd probably term that as "unclear", but meh. It doesn't really matter which you use in this case (IMO).

It this a better question for support, or is it on-topic. I feel like support would be better able to answer the question, but I generally don't spend time in Android, so I don't really know.

@Chipster I'd say it's too broad. The question is asking what changes need to be made. Other than the clear and obvious thing of upgrading to V3 of the API, which someone mentions in the comments, we can't tell them what actually needs to change without reviewing all of their code.

The OP says in a comment that they don't know what is using it and that it might be a dependency, which is something we'd expect to have to check anyway, but might narrow down what's needed in the question to only the dependencies.

But, overall, no, I wouldn't say it's a customer service question.

@Chipster Usually we don't move questions like that. We just leave them in the transcript. Asking questions is a normal thing. While it does leave an additional link to the post in the transcript, it's not something that will be found when reviewing requests.

@Chipster Understood, and thanks for asking. Discussing whether something should be flagged or closed when not sure, and then asking for cv-pls if you've concluded the question should be closed, is common practice and perfectly fine. A few examples of things we don't want in the room have indeed come up today, but that's not one of them :)

In order for the question to be migrated, at least three of the close votes (four on Stack Overflow) must be for migration to the same site. If the question reaches five close votes without this majority, the question will simply be closed for the next most-commonly selected reason. If the majority reason is for migration, but the majority votes are not all for the same site, the question will be closed as off-topic.

Can I ask a del-pls for this obvious duplicate? How to get last n elements of array in python. Not sure about the rules for posting deletion requests. The FAQ says "wait to post the del-pls until the post is actually eligible for deletion-votes", but I have no idea what that "eligible for deletion-votes" means.

@Georgy it means it needs to be at a -3 score. That question isn't at that mark yet.

@Georgy You must wait for a question to be closed for 2 days before you can vote for deletion. This restriction is removed for trusted users when a post scores -3 or lower quoted from the help but I'll add a link to our FAQ as well.

a weird hyperlink embedded on a spurious keyword with no clear connection to the topic at hand is a spam indicator on its own - they are promoting something and even though it's probably vaguely programming-related that still makes it undisclosed promotion coupled with weasel tactics

eh, to me it was asked like they were expecting XYZ behaviour on the site, didn't get it, came to SO to ask if we can see A/B - just felt like it was using SO as general forum more than trying to promote, but maybe it was the bad English that threw me

After years of passively using SO I decided to return something to the community and start contributing myself, by answering questions from time to time and supporting quality improvement efforts by using the Triage/First Posts queues. While reading up on all those rules and conventions here, I encountered this chat room. @Freddykong wrt to the question itself: it can certainly be a duplicate, even if you didn't know that that was at fault. If I tell you it is very difficult to cycle, and you give me a book on how to fix a punctured tire, I could tell you that that is not what I asked for. However, you would already have determined that the issue is indeed a flat tire, and that fixing that would solve my problem. (I know nothing about C#, this is just a general example)

i.e. the duplicate target might outline what the problem is in your code, and how to fix that, even if you didn't know that that was the problem. This is quite common, because if you would know where the problem was, and that "indexing" indeed is the problem, you would've found the duplicate yourself.

@Freddykong I'm no C# person but it could be a duplicate. Sometimes the same answer to a different question applies. When I hammer a question, what I look for in a reopen request is an understanding of the duplicate, followed by an explanation of why it's not a dupe

And Adriaan gave an excellent example of how that works

I've pinged a fellow RO who holds a C# gold badge to give it a look. They should get back to us in 6-8 ~~weeks~~ hours

just stumbled across the Game Dev SE - how comes that has it's own SE and not on-topic with SO (providing it's the right format for SO)?

Fun fact - when I spent ~10 years as a hobby game dev/modder in middle school/high school, I actually never touched the one 'programming' aspect of the whole process: in-game scripting using some incredibly simple abstracted scripting language. I spent most of my time building interiors, exteriors, linking the two, writing dialogue, setting dialogue settings, adding items to the world, updating our playable mesh library with new models/textures, etc.

Looking back on it now, I probably should've spent time working with the scripting language. It would've been fun

@Chipster You can issue any command in Charcoal. Mostly we just use report and coffee in SOCVR

@Chipster The main thing is that in SOCVR activity should really be about the content of the post, not the user. Fighting spam and R/A posts can become, at least to an extent, about the user and the patterns of the user's activity. In such cases, things should be done in Charcoal.

@Dharman BTW: The ReviewFinder userscript demonstrates one method of scraping review queue history. I'm not aware of a way to use the SE API to get review history. Note that you very likely must space out your requests in time, or end up with an IP block (temporary).

@M-- If it's not obvious why the name is objectionable, then you should be sure to explain the issue. This has come up with usernames that are slurs in limited geographical/geopolitical regions.

@M-- We'd prefer that you not share a link. Really, there isn't anything we can do other than raise custom mod-flags or use the "contact us" at the bottom of a page.

@Makyen OK. Makes sense, I won't share a link. But it is not a slur or anything. It's associating an unacceptable quality with a family member. e.g. Your Hypocrite Father (I changed the insult, etc. to avoid giving out their username).

Ultimately, the only people's opinion that is going to affect this is the moderator that handles the flag. If you've had one flag declined, then it's possible that the moderator just didn't understand why it was objectionable. In such cases you need to explain why you feel the name is objectionable. Just saying that you think that the username, perhaps, shouldn't be permitted doesn't really give the moderator much context.

How offensive something is often depends on a considerable amount of cultural context. If the person that you're communicating with doesn't share that cultural context, then the words are just a collection of characters.

Well I explained that someone would not find this particular example offensive and some might. But what's the stopping point. Let's say Your Hypocrite Father is fine, Your Fat Mother is fine, and then Your B!tc# Mama is not... What ruler we should use to measure whether it's offensive or not? I think if it's edgy, regardless of the fact that you (a mod) would find it offensive or not, an action should be made. Since someone else would find it offensive (because it's edgy).

Not saying the decision should be made lightly and they should rush to taking action whenever something seems slightly off. But should consider it with greater concern.

I did some research, tried a few IDES and even today I can't see anything that remotely resembles DW.

for visual design, I'm not sure / maybe not.

I use VS Code and I am happy, but I write code instead of drawing it

@TylerH No, it ends when this year does. The canonical definition of a "decade" refers to the period of time between the beginning of the zeroth year and the end of the ninth, i.e. {x | x ϵ [0,9]}. Thus, at the end of 2019 we end the 2010s and begin the 2020s
