For a long time I've been a "lurking" volunteer SO moderator,
participating on SOCVR and casting close votes and delete votes (I
occasionally disagree and just ignore the question). I joined SO when it
was very young (2008) and the emphasis was on interesting, answerable
and meaningful questions. Over time the frequency of interesting
questions that merited my investment of time to answer grew smaller and
smaller, buried in the avalanche of duplicates, "do/finish my homework",
and things like "How do I write a Web App like [insert social media app

maybe.. does closing a browser stop/cancel a request that's already in progress though? I thought triggering php (or anything server-side) via ajax would mean the server is still doing the process, it's just the client won't pick up on it as it's no longer there?

@treyBake I would argue this one's on-topic. It's not asking "What do you think of this code" which is kinda what you would send on CR, instead it's more of a "Did it in way A, is it possible in way B". As long as way A works and way B is clear, it's pretty much fine no?

The question could use some editing love though, particularly on the title

I think it would take a lot of editing to make it OK for me personally.. I just feel like most answers would end in "but that's just my opinion". There is no real absolute and factual way to rewrite code so that it's less ugly - what's ugly is a perspective thing

@NathanOliver Rep is assigned upon the move, based on the votes, not users. I had an answer on Meta.SO get moved to Meta.SE and got like 750 rep. I doubt all those upvoters had accounts on Meta.SE

@Dharman Because you can't delete a question unless it is closed, or you are a mod

With 5 CV it is unlikely that the question will be closed organically before the votes wither away and there is no chance of posting del-pls

The interesting part is what happens to the -1. It should (in theory) refund upon move and be re-applied if you register on the new site. I'm not sure on that, tho

I think people who cast their votes on the question which got reopened should be pinged by the system. Give them a chance to change their vote.

@Zoe It's really hard to give a tl;dr to that, not least because up to version 2.x ASP.NET Core can be used in conjunction with the legacy .NET Framework! I imagine they've gone all the way and target .NET Core. They will have to had to rewrite quite a lot of code. The benefits are that Core is cross platform, faster, and state of the art (arguably). Core will replace legacy .NET next year so they've also ensured they're not stuck on a dead stack. cc @Dharman

I always heard .NET sucked - but coming from a PHP background I imagine that was just people in the PHP community xD What's Core like to learn? Is it mainly for websites or is it more general?

@Dharman it means a lot of rewriting. beyond that I can't really say -- I don't write MVC (what SO/SE is now) or Core (what SO/SE is moving to)

When SE first started they used Linq to SQL as their ORM (as does the company I work for). They've been gradually moving their data layer over to their own library Dapper. I can only imagine that process is now complete as Linq to Sql is not available in Core. RIP.

@TylerH I have a Core 3.0 service in production already :) [A Windows service which pushes data to a Kafka cluster]

@treyBake .NET Core is a cross-platform replacement for the .NET Framework (think Java). You can write console apps and services with it, and Windows forms/GUI apps. ASP.NET Core is the web side of things (MVC/REST/gRPC etc), also cross-platform. There's a high performance embedded web server available too (Kestrel)...

ahhh I see, need to look more into languages, PHP is fun and beautiful an' all, but I feel like it's restricting my knowledge of certain design patterns that aren't really touched upon in webdev

In my experience so far you can get an awful lot done with not a lot of code, but I'm not the best person to ask about how easy it is to learn as a lot of knowledge is transferrable from .NET (not least the language, C#) and I've been using that for donkeys years.

Yeah with ya.. I've started doing some Java as it seemed like a nice stepping stone into the world of C, so hopefully once I do that, I can start diving into the bottom of the C C C

Nothing in particular, just want to expand on the theory side of development and feel like that'll be more achievable with a language that's more generalist rather than web-specific

@EJoshuaS Stating facts about the question alongside an actual close reason, where those facts are intended to make it easier for readers to evaluate the request (to choose to click to the question) or evaluate if the question is off-topic is fine.

@EJoshuaS It's when you get into commentary (i.e. "This question is terrible") that we want you to stop and stick to valid reasons. The comments are biasing to people reviewing the question. Stating the OP said something is not an opinion

@EJoshuaS If all OP said about their Q was that it's likely to get downvotes (and not why they think it's likely to get downvotes), I would say no, as lots of people are just pessimistic about their chances with things (especially when that thing is a question on Stack Overflow :-))

If you think the Q is off-topic without including the downvotes blurb, then by all means feel free to post a cv-pls using the off-topic reason

But if you think the Q might be off-topic only because of the blurb, then it's best not to post one. (And, after all, "low quality" is a downvote reason, not a close vote reason)

Are there any rules regarding del-pls for answers? I could not find anything in FAQ.

I see an answer which as per my understanding was just another question posted as an answer (code-only me too) and does not attempt to answer the question, but also will be definitely declined if I flag NAA

@Dharman I'm not really sure what you're asking. There are rules that apply to all del-pls requests and rules that apply to all requests. A subset of those requests are for answers, so, yes, there are rules that apply to del-pls requests for answers.

Tim post finally replied to the license change. He didn't answer any of the legal questions though. Most likely someone will have to sue as it looks like they are not budging. So sad.

That reminds me: I recently saw a website give proper attribution to a photograph hosted on Wikipedia (they credited the author and not just Wikipedia). I almost fell off my chair.

I doubt they'll respond. Their attorney has probably advised them to not speak on any of the legal aspects so there is no evidence in the public domain of what they do or do not know.
