The funny thing is that when visiting Stack Overflow as a newcomer there's surprisingly litte that unequivocally states that SO is about programming. Not even this page that newcomers see when starting to ask questions. Well, I'm just a bit baffled and trying to understand the mind processes going on there, if any :)

That's probably a question of tags. At the c++ tag realm, I have a quite low borderline what should count as a simple typo / cannot reproduce CV.

The issue isn't the use of the term "cucumber" in general discussion. It's that the term gets applied to specific users (either explicitly or implicitly) with a derogatory meaning. The term "cucumber", and all derogatory statements about users, or their behavior, are banned from request reasons. Requests are about content, not users. Using "cucumber" in general discussion is not banned, as long as it's not used in reference to specific users (either explicitly or implicitly).

But for the C tag, just have a look how many long time users who definitiverly know it better refuse to use even C99 features. I recently had one who even aviods line-comments in C (he uses them in C++!) because it would not work in ancient compilers (every reasonable compiler supports them even in C90 mode!). So, what do you do with such advice given to beginners?

Recently I had a short peek at the C2x proposals. Except for explicitly typed enums (yay!), there is nothing done to the language core. Opposite: they insist on backwards compatibility. Funny enough: C11 made VLAs optional, clearly breaking the holy grail.

@Makyen the Python room has a salad word "green bean" that means newbie... It's only used in context of "that seems a bit green bean"... never, ever, "User XYZ is such a green bean"... I think the term "cucumber" here is similar to that? (in terms of meant usage - not its meaning itself)

I lost faith in C making any advances. Personally, I use the gcc extensions I find reasonable and enhance code quality.

@Makyen I was beaten for using the term "cucumbering" (verb) and similar in the sense of "answering a bad question which should be closed. This is mostly done by users who know better and have the rep to CV. It was not directed to a specific user, but the action of answering per se, though.

@JonClements It is. The problem arose that the term started to be used to describe specific users in a derogatory manner. As long as people stay away from making it about specific users, it's OK to use "cucumber".

Well, regarding c++ we still have to deal with questions explicitly tagged turbo-c++ occasionally. What should we tell there really? That their teachers are incompetent assholes, or that questions about a compiler serving standards from the last century are probably moot?

While I'm not remembering the conversation exactly, I do recall that I felt there was some miscommunication as to the nuances in the discussion. IIRC, I tried to step in at the time (or at least the time that I'm remembering, there may have been others) to clear up that the issue was the term's use to describe specific users (even implicitly; e.g. "that question has a lot of cucumbers").

TC is even more special, as you really have to struggle to get a legal copy of that sh** and make it run on a modern PC.

@Makyen Well, I don't see any use in cooking that discussion again. Whatever the "misscommunication" was, I had to notice it is more relevant to get content than quality. Please notice this is not directed to you or specific users in thsi room, but a summary I got from the site's official presentation. Unfortunately, it's not just the site, but an overal development which makes "choosing words not to hurt snowflakes' feelings" more important than contents.

As ESL, I just didn't grew up in that culture, so I don't know the right phrases to attack someone without saying a single not nice word (which I had to experience here, too. OTOH, unfortunately(?!), I know the language well enough to notice when I'm dissed. All this makes me feel more and more I'm not welcome on this site. Again: that's not about this room. Actually it is the reason why I'm still/again here.

Wrt. the site in general, personally I feel both that there was more snark/derogatory comments then there should be, but also that the pendulum in enforcement swung too far in the other direction, where even just frank statements of the problems with a post can be considered inappropriate or hurtful. I expect that that, like most things, the enforcement of that has been/will swing somewhat back towards the center as people become accustom to the issues.

@Makyen From what I saw the last years not only on SO, but in general, I'm not that optimistic. This is a cultural issue. In my culture, sarcasm, irony and - yes - snark are very common and most of us learned how to handle it. From my personal experience, I can tell a light punch on the nose (not literally) for asking stupid questions or at the wrong time/place made me remember the situation best. And no, I don't think I got permanent psychlogical damage;-). I learned to think for myself first

If the culture has swung as far as it's going to go in that direction, or if it's going to go further as those that were brought up that way raise their own children. I agree that there are significant disadvantages to the extremes if the snowflake mentality. As with many things, a middle ground usually seems more effective to me.

@JonClements No, thanks. I wouldn't have touched Win3.x not even if it came pre-installed in ROM. I had to work with it occasinally in a job, but at home, I was happy with my ST. The poblems of the PC folks working around the 640KiB limt (which very well also was relevant for Windows) were always funny to see when I was woring with my 2.5MiB flat memory (self-soldered of course).

@JonClements You know I'm an bare-metal embedded dev, prefering C over C++ even, do you? ;-) But still, I just read the datasheet of an MCU (single chip) with 1MiB RAM and enough Flash for a nice, small OS and tons of peripherals like Ethernet, LCD, etc. And then I have to remember the ST aminboard which was larger than my current (large) desktop keyboard) and less than 1/400th of the processing power of that 4€ MCU ...

I wish I had time to work with that thing like I did with my ST. But who has years to write software for a single chip these days?

@JonClements Actually, IIRC, IBM used (uses?) a compression technique for their PPC systems. Idk the compression ratio, but afaik it worked not that bad. Of course it was/is a hardware approach, but it could be done in software, too. Just not without significant performance issues as they claimed.
