@EJoshuaS, @Enzokie, @KirkBeard, @KenWhite, @MartinJames, @Olaf, The way the question & answer look at the moment is that it has the appearance of 6 people from this room jumping in and mobbing the user and the question/answer. While many of the comments appear benign, we should strive to not appear like we're a mob. My guess is that the user said some, now deleted, things which were inflammatory, which got responses from multiple people here.

While, from time to time, we all (certainly including myself) add comments where it might look like multiple people from this room are participating (on the receiving end, potentially feeling like people ganging-up on someone), let's try to keep it to the spirit described in the FAQ, of letting one person, or, at most, a small number of people, take the lead.

At a minimum, please clean up any comments which are invalidated by the other user deleting their comments or by the question being closed. That way, moderators can see the whole thing, but regular users don't see a distorted view of the comments.

As I wrote the above messages, I remembered some times where I could have done better in this regard. I know that I will be trying to do better. I hope that others will too.

@TylerH Those criteria sound reasonable, particularly that it's any of the above. However, I'd also suggest allowing the user to select to use the question wizard. Some people are much more comfortable using a wizard type interface than one that's completely free-form. In addition, after someone is used to the wizard, they may prefer it.

Hmm, strange. It renders fine in Konqueror and Rekonq, Firefox, but CHromium only shows a minimal version, no images.

Try turning off JS. It's actually quite interesting, the article shows the architecture quite well. That thing would still be a good start for schools and students to learn how a computer works.

I still experience disbelief when trying to explain 'the chips do very simple things - do arithmetic, move numbers from one place to another, but very quickly: "That's silly, Martin - my computer does much more stuff than that!"

@MartinJames That's their first reaction for sure. But it is also an entry into showing how complex problems can be broken down into simple ones. And the simple instruction set can be extended, of course. It is more a matter of didactics from teh teacher's side than on the student's side of understnding. But of course it does require the will to learn - something our schools are designated to discourage from the very first class.

I later learned there was indeed a short period of time there were more good, young teachers who had not become already depressed already. It partly was a matter of the overal climate at that particular school, too.

All I remember was an experiment about polarisation of light. The teacher use a laser and the typical two filters to show how the light was cut off when they had a certain angle. Problem was, there was no light, even with a single filter. We thought about htis together with the teacher and came to the conclusion laser light is already polarised. After the break, the teacher confirmed this and he was honest he had to check this in books.
