@BhargavRao A Python question: How to check the spaces before other things? For example I have string ' te st', the output should be 4 since there's only 4 spaces before te st (startswith). I can only use re.match(' +', text).end, but however if it's 0 then it'll return None instead of 0, also I don't want use re in this case. Any ideas?

Asking whether or not a development strategy (here, cross-platform dev) has an impact on performance or user experience is incredibly broad.

it would be a good idea to have a definitive answer. Of course there's performance differences for different activities, but there would be a trend I would think.

@MsYvette Aside from the many link-only and VLQ answers this will receive, a good answer would have to look into many use-cases for said development platform, analyze them all, go into the defects (which will be fixed in time) of each platform, and do an extensive analysis and research on that. While I understand your concern about performances, asking "will using foo tool cost me performance" without a very specific use-case and an existing analysis and profiling of your needs is too broad.

I think any kind of cross-platform or cross-hardware development will tend to carry a practical performance cost.. for the simple reason that we don't have a single target to optimize and debug against.

@KevinGuan No idea about the report, but the general difference is that non-English languages can use Latin characters. Think French, which uses broadly the same Latin char set as English, but is clearly not English.

Ah -- the general subject of targeting a single piece of hardware interests me... since I look at lots of bugs all the time coming from just, say, GPU driver incompatibilities, having to target older versions of SSE, etc. It's hard to fully exploit one piece of hardware to the fullest with others to always keep in mind.... I envy devs who can just target PS 4, e.g.

There's this @Ike rin — A C# implementation that targets iOS, Android, and Windows Phone. Using Xamarin Studio, you can write your entire app in C# and compile it down to native bytecode.

@MsYvette This one is obviously off-topic for being a tool rec, this one is very POB and too broad. Answers on both barely touch the surface of each topic. The best answer on the first one was last updated 3 years ago so most of what's said about tools is probably outdated, the others relate experiences or explain a few differences between the different tools.

On the second one, the best answer barely tells of a few elements to take into consideration and the other answers are not really worth talking about

The more limited nature of the hardware is obvious, but I also don't see so many mobile apps doing really performance-intensive stuff.. like I don't see people running scalable servers on a mobile phone, or doing raytracing on a mobile phone, or doing scientific simulations of billions of particles on a mobile phone.... I do see them showing very graphical stuff in real-time with animations and sound -- maybe there? But I'd imagine a lot of the grunt work for those are handled by the API.

ah yeah -- though I always imagined the critical aspects of UI gruntwork (ex: SVG rasterization, image blitting, etc), if using something like Xamarin, e.g., would be handled by some native implementation behind an API that's optimized to smithereens.

for performance I'm always looking for the loopy stuff -- so if an application is slow, I'm always wondering where the loops are that process like hundreds of thousands to millions of things... most common loopy stuff for a user-end GUI app would be image processing loops... but typically those are buried under an API
