@TinyGiant I perceive two problems with today's closing mechanism

1. It still comes across as something that's final, a questions gets put on hold, and no one ever looks at it.

And if it happened to have a bad edit that won't get it some love in the reopen queue, it's likely to never be reopened.

I'm just afraid that if every "How do I..." question gets closed as Too Broad then we're going to be stuck with just debugging questions that in the end turn into typo questions. Eventually, all questions coming in will be closed and we won't have a service any more.

I understand how that can seem kind of backwards because we are in a room about closing stuff, but this room is about closing stuff that needs to be closed for the right reasons. We aren't here (at least I'm not) to just close every question on the site, we are here to maintain (and hopefully improve) the Q&A quality of Stack Overflow.

I agree with @TinyGiant I wouldn't necessarily close "How do I..." questions with no code as long as the question is clearly formulated. The reason is that I often find such questions useful myself.

That's why I usually spend most of my close votes reviewing "too broad; [javascript]" because far too often users vote and flag as too broad when the question is really on-topic.

When there is a question where the OP doesn't understand what a NPE is, it gets closed as a dupe of that question

because the answer is always basically the same

sometimes that's the cleanest way to answer the question and it's not like that answer is a link-only answer

also I didn't know about grepcode before I came to SO either..

@MrsEd I see what you try to achieve but I really doubt that will ever get implemented or well received for that matter. A lot of the quality problems arise from the lack of voters. I see way to many proposals that try to fix a symptom but not the root cause. But I'll give it some brain-time to figure out if it might fly. So consider this as my first, FGITW response.
