someone has to explain to me what's the difference between a ranger, a detective, a police and other public order officials

Detective is a position. Ranger a member of a specific organization (The Texas Rangers). Sheriff is the head of a county police department, Chief is the head of a city/state police department. Agents are typically federal law enforcement officers.

But anyway, a detective is a sworn police member; it's simply a rank. And they're also usually plain clothes

Functionally its just different levels of authority and responsibility. In any given place in the US you're subject to Local, County, State and federal law.

The usual tasks would be investigating serial car thefts.. thieves, etc.
