@Unihedron Yeah I've noticed it doesn't like infinite backtracking. :) But regex has never been a N++ priority... And a serious practitioner like you should really be on RegexBuddy (since you're on Windows). Get the free trial and get hooked. :)

On another topic I think I'm going to follow your example in August... Stay in the background and only answer the few questions that turn me on. :)
The hard thing is discovering these questions when you're not glued to the regex page.

I used to leave comments "Please improve your question for future readers by kind advice", but then there are always the high rep users playing the game and writing "I think your question's fine. The downvotes are for not showing your attempts." so I stopped.

@Unihedron Dude, the features are unbelievable. This review will give you a fair taste but there's a lot more to it. After you use it a bit, you really need to read the manual to discover how awesome it is.

@HamZa It did happen to get all the support to get through, which was astonishing to me. Though not very many people learn related to questioning from Meta, and The Academy was supposed to help with that. It's not really reinventing the wheel.

Q: Is there a use for lazy evaluation of 'zero or one', i.e. double question marks in a regex?

I am currently reading the Regular Expression Cookbook by Jan Goyvaerts and Steven Levithan. They mention that any quantifier can be made lazy by placing a ? after it, so this includes the ? quantifier, resulting in ??. Unfortunately, there does not seem to be any further mentioning of ?? in the ...
