Hey I got great results by moving the (curl > last_curl) check one statement deeper
It is currently check for every pattern length, but it needs only to be called if the frequency is increased. So I moved it to within the matching-loop
First results point to an ~8% speed increase!
But last_curl is either 2 or three, so could even move it to within the curl = 3 loop
Could you maybe try unrolling the loops that currently check for freq <= 4? Those are most often hit and could probably profit most by the last_curl condition being moved even 'deeper'
Got smaller speed increase for longer runs. My brother will do a run up to 46 to confirm results

Actually, we ONLY need to check `if (curl > last_curl)` when the curl == 3.
Curl = 1 will never make that true, neither will curl = 2 (because last_curl is 2 or 3).
Curl = 4 will break the sequence (when every loop is unrolled)
Then, we could maybe even make 'last_curl' a bool if that is faster?
Probably saved another 2% again by modifying the location of the last_curl check

Now THIS is exciting! The run from my brother to 46 gives us an estimate to 48 of 19 minutes and 42 seconds!!!

So, I think that we should unroll the last loops, and optimize the last_curl checks. Once that's done, we will not be able to squeeze much more performance out of the program. So, I'd then like to transform the Intrinsics over to Linux, and give the AWS a shot. Then I'll have a chat with my friend and maybe we will apply for the HPC then!

This sounds great! I have unrolled inner loops (by frequencies) yesterday; didn't send it to you as didn't see any performance increase.
Will combine with your optimization.
I also brought back packed cache. Found a couple of errors (since yesterday), but the run time is practically the same for cache width 32,33,34,35 and 36. This can't be true. Feels like it is capped somewhere at 32 bits, but I am staring at it for hours and can't see...
Will look at your changes now.
