I think it's a perfectly fine question, that beginners will run into and need a good answer for... Or actually not just beginners, I as an advanced user would greatly profit from a list of all available profile viewer tools... Note, that this is not asking "for the best" but rather for alternatives, so I don't think the danger of "opinion based answers" matters here.

@SimonDanisch -- it's asking for recommendations/suggestions/alternatives, which is off-topic. Any answer would be equally valid, making it a poor fit for Stack Overflow's format. Just because the question would be helpful doesn't make it on-topic.

This isn't a question asking for recommendations. The list of packages for visualizing profile traces in Julia is not based on opinion (as opposed to asking what package does that best).

There aren't many profiling packages in Julia. It is easy to give an exhaustive list which is not based on opinion so that someone can try them out. It's ok trey, we got this :)

What makes you think he is on multiple accounts? I disagree with your reasoning about libraries. There's also no guarantee that a given language itself will last forever either.

If a language dies, so does all the questions based on the language. Or even questions based on an older version of a language. Demanding that an answer last forever in perpetuity is an impossibly high bar.

Agree with Mason on that one. I don’t see where the line is drawn in regards to what can be talked about then. We can agree to disagree :) seems like it’s not that clear imo so I will personally keep doing what I think is right. Have a great day!

Instead, describe the problem and what has been done so far to solve it.

@treyBake The problem is that some profiling visualization tools don't work well on all platforms. A list of the existing profiling visualization tools answer the completely reasonable question "What existing profiling visualization tools exist in Julia".

Imho this is much more helpful than the help center for figuring out what constitutes a "recommendation question". In the end it's always gonna be a judgement call though...

@KristofferCarlsson I'm having hard times to install ProfileVieweron my mac since macs struggle a lot to install this package for unknown reasons isn't a clearly described problem. Which OS X version? Which exact version package? what error? what's your main goal?

Weird that the Julia people knowing this problem very well immediately knew what he was referring to...

@treyBake Fair enough. I still think there could be a good question for the answer we have, but don't know enough about the actual problem to formulate it.

Just a note: Software Recommendations exists specifically to post questions requesting recommendations of software to perform specific tasks. Please read their on-topic page prior to posting there. While I'm not all that familiar with Software Recommendations, I expect more details about your requirements would be desired for a post on that site. You'll probably also want to include more details about the issues you're having with your current software, so that people know what issues you want to avoid.
