Well, yeah, if you look Stack Overflow as a great beginners reference for using, say, Java (which I knew well before coming here) ... or Java Script (which I learned with the aid of Stack Overflow) - then, yes, Stack Overflow's database will help you a lot. Java 1 came out in 1996. JSP, Servlet's, C, C++ some of these languages are 30 or even 40 years old... (I'm 45 years old)... @customcommander In general, we don't reopen questions just to close them for another reason (please see this answer). While the reduction in close/reopen votes from 5 to 3 and gold-badge dup-hammers, significantly reduce the work, it's still a minimum of 3 people (4 votes) to do it here (or one moderator who's a Subject Matter Expert). There's not much gain over just leaving a comment with a link to the dup. IMO, it would only be worthwhile to seek out doing so if it's expected the question will be a good signpost for the duplicate, which is difficult to determine in advance. — Makyen ♦ 1 min ago

@Rounin There has been a rift on the SO user base for a long time. Those who came for the original mission to build a Q&A repository, and those who think So should be a helpdesk for learning. SO wasn't conceived as helpdesk for learning. I agree that a heldpesk for learning would be very, very beneficial for many newcomers - but I don't think SO should become one, because I don't think it'll work for a long time without paying the tutors. As the answer you link to states, this "permanent" suspension is not really permanent, as it needs to be prolonged manually. I expect the way to recover from it is just wait and hope the mods forget to extend it, then quickly prove you can review, as you really must have done something exceptional to make moderators put in work every year to keep you from reviewing. As for that user seeking restoration from his chat ban, if you read the history on it it's a clear case for why such restoration shouldn't be granted because he got suspended again soon after, annoying people in the process — Erik A 1 min ago
I wouldn't expect them to recover from this. Bans from the review queue are as lenient as they get, especially given that you can usually come back from them after a year max (manual maximum ban). That may be true, it isn't very welcoming for newcomers who need counseling/tutoring. But that was never the goal. And by blurring the lines more and more, the confusion and thus frustration becomes greater and greater. I usually try to get them to answering their own questions but providing a lot of hints. When that doesn't work I explain everything very slowly up to the point where they got the error. Sometimes I get creative and invent hypothetical scenarios. If everything fails then I simply show them the correct answer and get them to explain to me why it is correct. @Polygnome while I basically agree with everything you said, I think you're missing an important part of that formal CS background: it increases the chance of successful acculturation for two reasons. 1) It weeds out a lot of people who lack the interest or intelligence, and 2) it can open up some opportunities (if you're at a good institution and you take advantage) to be mentored in to the culture by older students, TAs, and possibly even professors. — Jared Smith 35 secs ago

@Roddy As for your present, meta question, if the answer helped you, and it isn't contained in the duplicate, then by all means go add it! You can either provide attribution and post yourself, or provide attribution and post it as a community wiki, either is fine. Unless the answer itself is of low-quality, don't get bogged down by other users trying to tell you what worked best in your own question and usage. I don't thing you're supposed to add an Answer that is identical to any other Answer. It doesn't matter if it's on a duplicate Question or not. I will again repeat that I have prooved that my answer works fine, simply proove the opposite if it's not. Saying not it doesn't work is far from being enough. It's not up to the OP to decide but the comunity. If the OP decide which answer works then why we allow the community to upvote/downvote or to close question?
