Thanks, the "Clash of Expectations" thread explains a lot. A suggestion: I was a user who came across this site because there are VERY few places these days (at least that I have found) for developers to exchange knowledge with each other. So, given that most people who come here are looking for a forum, perhaps it needs to be explained in a very CONCISE way (just like with the rules of posting) that site operates in a very unusual manner compared to regular forums. There is already info about this, but very few people read the rules of a forum because they are always too long, obvious (don't use obscene language etc.) and we just want to ask our question and get on with our day. I appreciate when people answer my questions and always offer thanks (a big problem on this site, by the way in how you handle polite responses - if someone says "thank you" you should NOT delete it. it it's simplest form, the explanation of what StackOverflow is and how it should be used is... Ask questions, get answers. The tour does a great job of quickly getting to this point. However... it does a poor job of getting into the intricacies of what makes this place tick. What kinds of questions are successful, and what kinds of questions aren't. I appreciate the time anyone took to write long documents and implement tours and such. I am one to make sure that a great amount of details is included in anything I write. But most users aren't going to read that much. I would suggest that, much like the rules of posting, the differences from a standard forum be presented very quickly in a few sentences. I honestly don't see how this question adds much to the quality of the questions and answers on this site, regardless of when it is deleted. There are definitely cases of semi-decent questions being deleted too quickly that need to be pointed out, but I'm afraid that this might not be one of them. — Hovercraft Full Of Eels 1 min ago

Regarding roomba deletion: Please note that roomba only collects question which do not have upvoted answers. That wasn't the case when the question got deleted, but it also wasn't very unlikely that the asker upvotes one of the answers. So if one wouldn't vote to deleted, they have to monitor the question for the next 9 days to make sure that no answer gets upvoted or that the question gets improved. — BDL 50 secs ago

@Trilarion - It sounds like you are suggesting a mod ban every time there's an unresolvable difference of opinion. If so, not only would the community find such draconian measures untenable, but the mods themselves would likely rather quit than be forced to make those kinds of decisions. Suspensions are the last resort and typically used to deal with users who are defacing content, etc. You would have your work cut out for you swaying me that in this case the OP is defacing their content. — JDB 1 min ago
IMO, questions with titles that are unsearchable by users with the given problem shouldn't be answered, without first editing or at minimum suggesting an edit to fix the title. Otherwise, you're just wasting your time. Sure, you're helping one person, but you're throwing away the time that you could have instead used helping dozens, hundreds. I was very upset a few hours ago with what I perceived as very hostile and frankly rather unprofessional behavior. My suggestion is to take steps to improve the approach so that new users do not misunderstand this. Even the short sentences I wrote above would help. Of course, another would be to introduce a parallel less-formal standard forum and curate the most useful posts into this one (maybe along with awarding "reputation points" to those that meet the qualifications in the less-formal forum). — ag87 1 min ago

@Félix I mean, you're saying you could generalize to cube root, 4th root, etc, but you could also generalize to any other operation besides exponentiation like multiplication for example, i.e. "Why is
x*(1/n) always 0?" One more thing about the reputation points: Even knowing what is explained in the "Clash of Expectations" thread, every time I see the negative points piling up on my question here I cannot help feeling very angry. @KevinB Now we come to the rub. IMHO the chances of a newbie asking any question that has a really useful long term future are almost a priori impossible. The vast majority of newbie questions should be deleted on this basis, even if they are well constructed ,(as this clearly wasn't). and, i agree with you, that often simple questions are too hastily deleted without there being an existing canonical to cover the topic. but. I also think there's a certain point where a question is... so self explanatory that it is beneath existing on this platform. I'm not sure where that line exists in c#, but in javascript for example, asking how to access the property of a 1D object is beneath that line, for example. — Kevin B 47 secs ago
@KevinB Absolutely right. I only follow C#, SQL, VB and VBA, but the same problems are there. I have never asked a question on this site; not that I know everything, but I have always found a solution by searching. 99% of all questions here shouldn't be asked, if people only searched correctly.
