@halfer I didn't mean to necessarily express opposition to moderation of activities outside the network, yet (it's where the activity can't be proven that I was concerned about). However, now that you mention it, I am kind of uncomfortable with it in at least some ways.

But I do understand that there can be a need for that kind of moderation.

I don't have strong enough (and resolved enough) feelings about the subject to try to change the way things are, though, atm.

But I do like to talk about ideas.

Whether or not they're the most appropriate ones, per se.

I've used it on another SE site a lot, but not here.

When I first used them, I was a little surprised that they didn't have to be used in real-time, but I guess that makes them a lot more useful.

I mean, being able to talk to people who aren't online, yet.

I added everyone here to the list of people who have permanent write abilities in the chat, FYI. So, I think you should be able to talk even if it goes inactive.

@EthanK888 How the chat works? Well, it's like other chat rooms in that you can chat while everyone is online, but it's different than some in that you can still talk to people who won't get your messages for a while. To send them a notification (so they'll know to check the chat), you can ping them with the @ symbol before their username (and they'll see it in the recent inbox messages anywhere on StackExchange).

If they don't use the chat in a while, then you won't be able to ping them unless they come back. You can invite them back, though (click on their name by a message they've previously posted in chat, and it should take you to a place where you can invite them back—but they still have to choose to come back).

'in a while' is something like a few to several days. I'm not sure how long.

You don't see the invite thing if they're still an active user.

You can talk about pretty much whatever you want. Keep it clean or I'll probably leave, though.
