This cannot be normal, right? I am trying to change essentially two lines in a file. I can't. Because the project uses node-sass, so it fails to work. I npm install all dependencies again, that fails with a node-gyp error. Which is very verbose and not at all informative way of saying "the version of node-sass doesn't work with the version of node, you have".

Of course, it could also be saying other stuff in other cases, like "you've forgotten to install the built chain for Python". But in this case it's a version mismatch. So, I have to go cross-reference which version of node-sass works with which version of Node

After noting which works with what, use nvm to swap versions, then run the whole npm install again. Which, quite obviously (/s) writes over package-lock.json. Why wouldn't it? It's not like the file is there to maintain stable dependencies or anything. I need to do npm ci because the behaviour of install was changed in Node 15. I switched to Node 15 to run this.

So far I've spent ~30 seconds on code changes, ~30 minutes on GETTING THE THING TO WORK. And it only took me 30 minutes (as opposed to my entire will to live) because I'm aware what a pig Node projects can be and can find and address the issues sort of fast.

i can say, i've had a hell of a time trying to use node-gyp based tools in older projects when i've needed to use it on a newer version of node than the version it was originall built with

Would have been great if the error said "Can't use node-gyp version <something> with Node version <whatever>". But no, instead it just spews out C++ compilation errors. Which are completely useless to me. I'm not going to go fix them or anything.

makes me want to just not use node-sass, even though it makes css so much easier to deal with

I much prefer to handle css away from the modules themselves, rather than css per component solutions and node-sass is just perfect for that

Use a <div> then reinvent all the functionality for how dropdowns work. Select2 went this route. I'll let you know if they ever actually succeed.

If somebody has 247 posts on the jQuery tag, is it appropriate to consider they should know what the difference between a string and a variable is? And I don't mean something clever or obscure about how strings or variables work - I mean shouldn't they know how and why fn(foo) is different from fn("foo")?

They also have 108 posts on the PHP tag. For all that matters.
