should the api error on uppercase usernames or just turn them into lower case?

if the user logs in with an uppercase username, would that be an invalid login

sure, or we could auto lowercase it

I don't think i've ever had something tell me i couldn't login, or register, because the case of my username or email was wrong

@KevinB but.. thats mostly because most platforms dont give a F. For e-mails this is potentially wrong behaviour, for usernames it can be hard if utf-8 is allowed and someone is using special characters f.e. with/without composite representation, so it's not lowercase but rather a normalization and canonical representation

on the other hand.. most older people do not understand why a login doesn't work when characters case differ.. so it's a good way to keep those from calling support

@JBis I'd personally go with normalising to lowercase. It's just simpler, users don't have to deal with the annoying "you typed it User, you have to type in user" which is menial useless error correction.

Again I'd say that should all be handled on a frontend

let the user type it how they want, do the conversion if it makes sense to do so, and send it. the amount that you let auto convert probably depends on your needs/requirements
