Maybe jquery wraps it somehow so that it goes run event listeners though

either it's bound or it isn't

or, some other previously bound event is stopping them.

I was able to recreate your issue by using capturing and adding a click handler to the body that stopped immediate propagation

but it would have been easier to just forget to bind the event

swapping it back would prove that it doesn't make a difference
