@littlepootis OCaml and Haskell are not hippie at all. I can see why you'd say that for Rust, though. Left JS because once you experience the power of a good static type system, you reach enlightenment and stop falling over clever concise code in dynamic and weakly typed languages.

@AwalGarg What do you think of TypeScript?

@MadaraUchiha I like it a lot! It suffers drag because of two things: it still has to rely on the rest of JS ecosystem which is primarily un-typed, so the overall benefits from typing are reduced. And executing it requires transpilation even on the server, which is a bit of a hiccup. Otherwise TS is good.

Last I checked it was over a year ago, and it wasn't great

But now I've got multiple people telling me it's good or at least better

I'll probably need so start a project with it soon to test it again

@MadaraUchiha Yup, I tried it back then too and it wasn't that good. TS 1.7 is good though. Note though that it still feels like hammering types over an un-typed language. You won't get the same benefits as in the other languages. Same with the optional typing in Python 3.5 (except that Python isn't exactly weakly typed as JS, so it is, atleast in theory, a bit better).

they are working on streamlining it

added a new @types/package npm namespaced package typing scheme in 2.0

and for smaller libraries it's easy to write your own typings for them

worst case you don't get typings for libraries

but for all major libraries you do

we used Elm for a bit

it has some really cool features

but small community holds it back for now, imo

to me, a use case would be anything that required transpilation anyway
