For me it looks like that your originial string consists of sections delimited by spaces. You have a function that modifies the original sections by a given rule, each section that is not "x" should replace the original value respectively. For "x" it keeps the original value. Anything that's left in the original string should stay as is.
If thats not your goal you should clarify it, that was the only pattern i could see in your comments
