I don't trust SMS based 2fa systems

SMS is of course bad, but these black box keys are a questionable shit too. I'd prefer just using a good password on a clean system which is hard to crack.

There are multiple u2f vendors. I currently use my Trezor, Ledger, or a plethora of Yubikeys. Obviously, don't go on aliexpress and buy the $1 tokens. That's just asking for trouble

still, even for them you don't have any practical ways to verify how good they are.

Ledger and Trezor are largely open source, and I'm trusting them with not-insignificant amounts of crypto, so I'll roll with them on u2f too. Yubikey is an industry standard for the moment, albeit closed source

It's the same logic by which I continue to use intel processors etc.

I can't verify it, and there is a chance it's all fucked, but perfect security is a pipe dream

I would trust these three far more than intel, however
