I think the issue is it getting focus when the activity starts

it puts the hint at the top from the beginning

So, since it has focus, the hint starts at the top is one issue. But I have to use match_parent for the width (or I'm assuming a fixed width) of the other ETs for it to show on the line

And the hint doesn't go back to the line if I delete what I entered

No, it's very strange.

Have you tried setting the bounds of the EditText to match parent? That way, it fills whatever space the TIL fills. That might make a difference.

I had to set width and height of the ETs to match_parent to get them to show when it first starts. But I shouldn't have to

I'm sure a fixed width would do the same but I shouldn't have to do that either

Well, it made sense to me. You want the EditText to take up all of the space of it's parent, and you use the TIL to set the bounds you actually want.

When you leave focus, the hint should go back to the line unless there's text in there.

You might not want it to take up the space of it's parent though. It should take up the space of the hint when using wrap_content. At least, I think that's how it worked before when using hint

Yeah but I thought that it went back to the line when there were no characters in there. That's not a big deal I guess

If it has focus, and there's no characters, the hint will be up top. Because you have focus.

Sorry @Mauker. Why does your design team tell you to use A700 as the primary color and not 500?

The problem with using A700 as the primary color, is that there's no darker hue on the palette to use for the status bar, so that's one downfall.

In addition, the prefix A signifies accent colors, while the plain 100-900 are variations of your primary color.
