Hi there, I have been thinking aon what basis do SO users cast their vote for moderator. Most of these useers have similar decription (high number of helpful flags, community partitcipation, etc). In my opinion major factors in casting a vote might be Country (candidate from the same country), Profession (student, professor, dev), reputaion score, etc.
But none of these are good reason to select somebody as moderator. It would be nice to hear from different people what was the major factor in casting their vote
@ArpitPatel Go to the election page. Beside each user's nomination post are three buttons: 1st choice, 2nd choice, and 3d choice. For each user who is in your top three, click the appropriate button.
No. There are always three choices, regardless of how many vacancies there are. The voting is done using Meek STV, I think it is called. Since there are three vacancies, the top three from that algorithm are chosen, but that's not why you vote for three people.
@Cerbrus While that's true, I don't think it's right to tell people how they should evaluate candidates. Everyone has their own opinion- otherwise we could elect moderators based on an algorithm and skip elections
I think it's a fair stance to vote for a moderator which might be more visible in the areas of the site they are
@Rob: as Shog mentioned, I think the Q/A answers are a good indication of how a candidate would work as moderator. There's no algorithm tho select a good moderator, since it isn't just enforcing rules, or a measure of activity. There's so much more to it
But then again, users are free to vote however they wish
Let me just quick say this: please don't use reputation as your primary metric for selecting moderators. We're electing people to handle flags, not answer questions.

With all due respect to the other candidates (and there are plenty of good ones), I personally believe that ArtOfCode and Andy are the two who most understand the responsibilities of the position, so don't look past them just because of reputation score or some other number.

Again, not disparaging the other candidates, most of whom I think would do a great job, just wanted to point out two who (based on primary voting) might be getting overlooked based on reputation.
@BhargavRao Been gone for a week at a tradeshow, so missed out on much of the primaries. Unfortunately, it's something that you have to remind people of every election. At least this isn't as bad as it was before the moderation badge requirements.
Undo's a good guy. Coming from the same camp, I feel that both Andy and Art would certainly make good mods. Hopefully Andy makes it to the top 3 and Art comes atleast in the top 5, so that he can be called up later.
But I also share the same concern, Andy surprised me last time when he finished 11th. (Again rep is to blame). Once the general Stack Overflow user learns to look beyond reputation, we will have good candidates becoming moderators.
Hmm, On second thoughts, I'll put Art as my first choice (instead of myself).
Existing mods - what do you think the site primarily needs from a new moderator? Is it primarily about getting extra labour to crunch flags? Or are there other things that you think are important, like fixing a gap in existing mod coverage - perhaps we need someone from a particular timezone, or someone active in Documentation, or someone active on some other Stack Exchange that SO has lots of migrations to or from?
I can see things that make me rule out some candidates (e.g. slightly poor communication, or questionnaire answers that demonstrate either a lack of conscientiousness or a lack of understanding of settled policy) but of the many capable-looking candidates that remain, I'm unsure how to pick between them.
