If ommitted, a default value of 10 will be used. This is a good baseline cost, but you may want to consider increasing it depending on your hardware.

My assumption is that dynamic isn't going to be removed in 4.5 or 5.0. That example wouldn't match your first requirement, but would match your second, and both claim to be the exclusive criteria for using version specific tags. " so you will need to use @ just as you would use it for file_get_contents(URL) in case host is not reachable, the same happens with getimagesize() when it encounters an invalid image.

@ircmaxell just one thing I hate on OS in general: when I cannot simply start: if I have to configure a lot, I have to install a lot, I have to @!&%# when my OS wants to update, I'm not asked if I'd like to install updates when shutting down, but I don't want to wait for the install etc. etc. etc. I think for a single person OS X increases productivity. (I don't discuss about managing multiple computers from a central place, but about personal use.)

It's a difficult problem to solve with free labor, though. The concerns over all the additional review workload are certainly justified.

Another thing I'd like to see was a revamped rep system that spreads out more horizontally and emphasises the community actions instead of answer grinding. I wouldn't mind capping the visible display of rep at 100k either.

@rdlowrey I totally agree, and I've said it before - almost the only people who are posting questions now are those who are unable to successfully use google to find their answer, which almost inevitably will have already been asked many times on SO.

right now, I could get gold in security by just answering 120 questions. I could put bogus answers, not enough to be useful, but just enough to prevent mod action. How does that help the community?

@ircmaxell the required amount is somewhat dependent on the field though. I can easily see the number make sense for PHP, but not for … say MVC. Then again, why would anyone want a gold badge in a narrow field anyway?
