wouldn't help here. a device logs in and I instantiate a logging (audit trail) class, which involves checking if the table and indexes are present and correct in the db. As I already buffer log entries in memory until the device ID is known, I think I can spin this class creation off to another thread and log to the in-memory buffer until it is ready.

it's mongodb atm with one collection per device, so that I can set different TTL values for different devices (and it should make querying cheaper this way). So another option is to go back to one collection for all devices and init that before I allow any incoming connections.

When it snows here I always head out in my hot hatch. Last time, I got up to 60mph (100kph) on a straight, with all-weather tyres :D

I had a Subaru Impreza (all wheel drive) for a while, and took that out in the snow for the first time. What I didn't know was that ABS doesn't work well on ice so when I came to a T junction I couldn't stop. It was either rally driver flick round the corner or straight on through a fence and into a field :)

I was extremely fortunate there was no other traffic

If it gets warmer, the snow ends up melting too quickly on the windshield and it starts icing on windshield wipers or the windshield itself, and that's hell driving in

The windshield gets wet, in combination with getting ice on the wipers themselves, which reduces the effectiveness and basically makes it harder to see anything
