@TelKitty This small piece of round rock is actually pretty big, very friendly compared to what's out there and still fairly empty. It would be stupid to go out there before exploring what's right in front of us.

You do know that humans are not at the bottom of the food chain right? Which means we need way more than 1000 square meters of land of vegetation to support 1 person.
And there is limited amount of resources, growing population.
If we have travelled outside of this galaxy, you can tell me that it's stupid to go outside of this planet. For now, I can only say that you are calling the grapes sour.

Well, we know they are pretty sour. Mars doesn't have the nice atmosphere we enjoy and no magnetic field to shield us from radiation. Venus does have a nice atmosphere, but no ground to stand on without burning your feet and we don't know how to build flying cities, never mind self-sustaining. And then it gets even worse for the rest.

There surely are nice planets elsewhere, but with our current knowledge we know we cannot survive a trip there. A universal speed limit combined with enormous distances is a very bad combination.

As long as it's only robot and machines, targeting more distant things is fun

@Morwenn Arguably all of these problems have the common solution of having leadership that actually works. Some organization where competent people get to make decisions which are then easy to look up, including the reasons for the decisions. We probably can't afford much in-fighting if we want to progress.

"having leadership that actually works" will probably be a problem forever since even leaderships that worked had issues and changed for reason X or Y over time
It is an objective to pursue with high priority, but we can't wait for it to work for everything

Maybe not for everything, but I feel like attempting a difficult task while failing at the easy task is futile.
It feels like we're trying to make Pong and are failing, so we switch to an MMORPG with perfectly realistic graphics, physics and innovative combat. The argument that we shouldn't let our inability to make Pong stop us from making the MMORPG just isn't convincing.

The part where we fail to colonize the Antarctic and thus shouldn't attempt to colonize Mars seems fair. I suppose the working leadership is not a fair requirement. It's probably possible to achieve that goal without.

I search for a folder on C: and it takes multiple minutes. I open a result, it's not what I wanted, so I go back. It searches again for multiple minutes. I find the next result, but learning from my mistake I use the Rightclick->Save Search function. Guess what it does? It searches again. For multiple minutes.
And the search is saved, apparently, but it doesn't change anything in the behavior. It just searches every time you do something. There also doesn't appear to be any "load search" function.

@traducerad Well one concern about malloc is that it can be a random source of performance issues. Also, so many places let you do malloc during the initialization phase.

Another amusing note is that the stack is dynamic memory (kinda). So, usually when banning malloc, some people ban recursion.
