If you have an integer, and you zero all bits that come after 8 most significant bits, then the difference with its original value is at most 1/256 (percentage wise), right?

For small values, the percentage is much higher.
01ffffff -> 01000000 is almost 50% loss
00ffffff -> 00000000 is 100% loss.
