I don't get the claim that riches are getting richer. A very small minority, maybe. Consider much lower productivity due to COVID-19 this year, there are less pie to be divided by everyone. It is possible that everyone gets less because there are less things produced.

It's weird that people can still be optimistic about the medium term economy. I start to wonder whether there will be a quick bloodshed on the stock market over the next few months or there is going to be a slow decay of the stock index over the next 1-2 years.

We are in the worst economic crisis for over 60 years and stock market is not reflecting this.

I know how I said that the stock market is forward thinking. But it does look like there are much revenge speeding going on.

The only reason I could see an ever increasing stock index when economy recovery is nowhere to be seen is that your money is soon going to be worthless (inflation due to too much money printed and not enough goods produced).

@TelKitty this printing inflation thing is a bit complicated for the US. Don't know much about it but they can get away with printing more than others, I heard.

Maybe it has something to do with US dollar being the most "powerful" currency

Yeah, this is likely the case, although somehow I thought a PhD and like 40 papers, some number of patents and work in exactly what they do would help. Also like 7 years ago they sponsored my work. Although admittedly only a few actually fully rejected.

Supply vs demand. For example, normal times maybe 5 applicants for a job. Recession: 50 applicants for a job. Depends on the recession, maybe even 150 for one job.

The patent thing is really messed up at UIUC. The only thing the inventor status helps with is that I get a discount for licensing the stuff I came up with :-(

@nwp They work just fine for internal use. It's only conversion fo/from some external representation to internal that causes difficulty (though granted, if we had guarantees, that would be a really common use case for them).

@traducerad In the US the salary isn't decent. Its like $30k, which is barely livable (for example, you can't really afford a car which is required in many of the places). In the EU its much more livable. The flip side is that I was my advisors only student with US citizenship, so calling academia "American" is a stretch.

Really I took a gamble on my PhD advisor. I knew he was volatile but he had a publishing hookup. It almost paid off, I mean I did get like 40 papers, and it took 7 years of extreme patients before we finally broke up.
