So the spec reads, for example: type "i2" is stored on disk as a 2 byte signed integer, 2's complement, big endian, along with a diagram of the bits.

Hi guys, I need help with binarySearch with an array of strings

I want to understand thoroughly how such data is meant to be read into a C++ primitive data type. I understand that typically, ints (more like short in this example though its not guaranteed either) are stored 2's complement in RAM with C++. But not always. And a short can be more than 2 bytes long on a given arch.

So am I supposed to read it bit by bit and reconstruct the integer, or can I just read it with a reinterpret_cast of the bytes after adjusting the byte order to my machine's endianness?
