@milleniumbug It's not really about hating fun. It's mostly about willingness to deal with volume. At least IMO, most people want to read about 3 to 5 good posts a day. They're willing to deal with about 100 total posts per day in the hope of finding those fewer good ones. When their volume (filtered by tags, etc., as they see fit) goes much higher than 100/day, they start to look for ways to keep the volume manageable, and nearly the first is to work harder at defining topicality much more tightly.

Basically, if your server is using a trade-secret algorithm that you never disclose (because you want to maintain a competitive advantage), and someone else independently comes up with the same thing and patents it, they can come after you because you.

That would be why you file a patent in the first place. But when it's really competitive, you don't want to do even that because people outside your jurisdiction will copy it anyway and you can't do anything about it.

@orlp This isn't entirely false, but it's mostly irrelevant--if a little guy with little money has a good enough patent, excellent lawyers will be happy to work now and get paid when they win a case. The reality is that when a big company beats a smaller one in a patent case, it's usually because they have better patents, not better attorneys.

@orlp Not sure, but it sounds like you may have missed a bit if irony/sarcasm in my post. I'm pretty sure I've never once studied at all during the 8 or 10 hours leading up to an exam.

I never really set any kind of policy/guideline against doing so, but never felt any need to do so either so I took the lazy route and didn't. From what (little?) I can recall, the results were usually fairly adequate.
