runescape had this basic pathfinding which was really just doing some sort of raycasting up to the player and if there was an obstacle in-between, that was it, the NPC would run up to the obstacle and sit there forever

I immediately thought about the (I think) classical algorithm where the elevator moves in one direction as long as there are people waiting to ride in that direction. @Jefffrey From what I've heard, the programming primarily governs what floors they go to in what order. Safety mechanisms are (at least normally) hard wired. If you want to avoid computers in transportation, nearly your only choices are walking and bicycles.

Even bicycles may be open to question (many have computerized speedometer, odometer, etc.)

Elevators are one the safest means of travel available.

@Jefffrey Somewhat, but I think those who find it the scariest have been deluding themselves. It's certainly true that a 3D printer is a lot less expensive (and more versatile) than most machine tools. Nonetheless, it's been a long time since making a firearm on your own was extremely difficult. This is especially true if you don't care much about accuracy or longevity.
