@Mikhail I technically could if I needed to. The most effective trick my students threw at me was to discard 9 inputs out of 10. The sorting was quick, the result was lacking.
@Puppy I don't understand. Please elaborate.
 
consider the following
1. Radix sort (in this case, just use the first letter as the radix- nothing else)

2. Go through the array until the radix changes, then radix sort that subsection- this time, just use the second letter as the radix, nothing else. Do this until you reach the end of the array.
3. Repeat for each other part of the radix.
 
Puppy, we had stipulated a free preprocessing step. As long as you didn't do any ordering that wouldn't count against your time.

I imagine your idea to be quite competitive without the first preprocessing step.
 
it's not preprocessing, it's ordering.
you perform the radix sort across e.g. 25 bits without needing to actually radix sort on more than, say, 5 bits at a time
 
With the preprocessing step I'm able to compress a 6*8 bit value into a 3*8 bit value (+1) that makes a difference.
 
yeah, but you also said you can't use a 25-bit radix
 
The lost buckets are still part of the cache.
 
whereas in my solution you don't need a 25-bit radix
you perform multiple radix sorts at lower bitness

I'd be interested in any measurements you do. If you want the actual data file I'm happy to provide that to you as well.
I'm not claiming to have an optimal and (reasonably) general solution.
@Puppy Yes, I think I did 256 + 256 + 512.
My claim is to have a solution that is reasonable and that every part of my solution was part of the class.
