@AlexM. templates can result in your executable being bigger, as foo<T> and foo<U> are two functions, opposed to using a polymorphic base type. I say can, as compilers can remove the duplicate code. Doing it via python to generate two separate function bodies offers nothing.

this was a follow-up to me proposing a template-based solution for a problem in a general thread about code quality and improvement

he was an ex-lead programmer who was there for longer than me so I replied with what I thought was the most diplomatic way to make sense

It also depends what they mean by performance. Templates are resolved at compile time, so it hurts build times (the last thing on earth to worry about really). They can be a bit hard to read (for some people), but that is solved by educating. Executable size can be larger than other solutions, but avoids less look ups, so there's a tradeoff there.
