and if we put IBOutlets in the @implementation .m file, I don't think they can be detected by Interface Builder

The question is, what type of view controller is the game screen?
Is it a navigation controller itself?

and its not working

Ok. I have one more question : Can I have multiple UIButtonswhich has only one UILongPressGestureRecognizerobject in Interface Builder? Or for each recognizer I need separate object of recognizer? I did something like this :

You should be able to share them... but I'm not sure that UIButtons play nicely with gesture recognizers at all.

Thats what bugging me.
recognizer.view.tag is giving me wrong tag of UIButton

Could be a bug, but I doubt it:

From the docs:
A gesture recognizer operates on touches hit-tested to a specific view and all of that view’s subviews. It thus must be associated with that view. To make that association you must call the UIView method addGestureRecognizer:. A gesture recognizer does not participate in the view’s responder chain.
'a specific view'.
Indicates that it only works on one view
