It's kind of insulting that after 40 years branching needs to be "manually optimized". The compiler ought to be smart enough to analyze the context and help where it can, automatically.

I don't want to live on this planet anymore if anything else is the case. I use the ternary operator because I want to be a little slicker, not to optimize anything. If a statement is compatible for a one-liner, I do it.

The compiler needs to do the right thing. Be it heuristics or a deterministic analysis.

We all have far more important things to worry about when we write code. That's why we made the damn compilers and languages.
