dot is faster? I'd assume that since dot was written over top of brackets that it would be slower

@ErrorErrorError please. You stop. This is a Q/A site where downvotes and upvotes mean something. They mean that a question or answer is useful or not useful. To mass vote on things in the space of 5 minutes shows a lack of discernment between useful and unuseful things. It's more than numerical values, much more, and that's what we're worried about. We don't want some newbie coming in and thinking Neal's perfectly good question is bad because you downvoted it.

I have spans that sometimes overlap like the picture and I need to treat them as one unit. However, I can't really do that for obvious reasons. Can anyone think of a better solution?

I'm annotating DNA, so say there's a section of DNA that is 12 bases long that is missing in individuals with a certain disease. It's possible that there is another section adjacent to that which overlaps and is important for another reason
