A family or 2 will emigrate from Mexico, start a restaurant, and as it gets more successful more people from the neighborhood/village will come up and work for them. I'm designing my database for a review-website right now and it got me to thinking: when would someone not want auto-increment for a non-natural ID? When they have some distributed system that hands out IDs for inserts?

Same. I get it when you don't have an "ID" on a table and you do your joins based on some natural key (auto_increment requires a PK on the column for most DB engines AFAIK), but it really seems like way to go for 99% of inserts related to site actions
