What's the best approach to a query where all I need to know if a field is already present? I'm making a call to the server just to see if the userName is taken.

I know I could do it with WHERE user_name = ?, but there's also EXISTS...but it seems like a worse solution. I probably just don't know how to use it.

@m59 I usually do SELECT COUNT(*) FROM user WHERE username = ?, but you could also SELECT 1 and check the rowcount too
