I know that CSS3 has a "mask" thing that I think would do that, but I don't know absolutely anything about how it works

If you scroll down though, there are examples of masking off an external area

here's an example where they mask off everything outside of a specified area, like you want (although in this it's a mickey-mouse head shape for some reason, hah) thenittygritty.co/css-masking

I wish I knew more about doing graphics stuff with HTML/CSS. I know there's so much more out there these days but I don't know much about it all.

Yeah, looking more at the css masks stuff it seems to be described as "premature for use in production"

So it's probably not your best bet for anything real

Such is the life of a web developer - so many cool things you shouldn't actually use yet

ah hah found a better way to do it, make the original image darker and then put a copy of the image onto the middle square as a background image

and then just change background-position depending on where the middle square is

from my understanding the concept is very simple, you need to test every combination of methods arguments valid values and invalid values
like if you have a method that has two parameters and each parameter accepts only 2 valid values, it's
