they have unique problems and are in a unique position to create solutions. I wouldn't take what companies like Google of FB do on their servers as a sign of what normal stacks should be going at. they also use a lot of other technologies for very specific reasons in their 'ecosystem'

there is a big difference between deciding on things when you see 100 hits a day vs 100 billion hits a day

I also wrote libs because I had specific problem, some problems turned out to be generic enough to resuse the code I wrote to solve it.
