I need help with my understanding. It feels like to me that WinRT is the new Win32 and API is designed just like the .NET framework API. However I cannot use all the same .NET framework items in WinRT, I can use some but not all. So is WinRT consider .NET or is its own thing using C#, JavaScript, or C++?
@DineshVenkata That's the point of Windows 8. There are more than one native language. The only thing you don't have is the performance of C++ and DirectX.
@DavidBasarab It is a basically subset of .net. Similar to how silverlight or windows phone development offer some parts of the .net framework, they also have controls and extensions that are only available as part of the winrt framework

@DineshVenkata I would suggest creating a "grid app" from the VS 2012 template. It has sample data in it and you can start just by massaging that and replacing bits of content here and there.
@ComFreek No, no. Even though IndexDb is available to C# developers, the reality is, it's just like a dictionary to us. There's no reason to go through that extra work. Just use a serialized dictionary if that's all you want.
@ComFreek Yes, if you want to use a HTML5 standard database, Index DB will be a good approach. It's non-sql, just name/value pair. It's one of the way to do local storage.
@mvark if you own two apps from the Windows Store? Why would you not just download it again? Copy is the hard way. You can install on 5 machines (without additional cost) after you purchase from the store.
@ComFreek You can register an app as a file handler, however. That means files ending with .myapp can automatically launch your app and are passed to it. This might be part of what you are wanting to accomplish.

@JerryNixon QUESTION: With all of the new devices coming out that support Win 8, what is the best strategy for testing to ensure the application works well across various devices without having to purchase a ton of hardware?
@JohnKoerner there is a screen resolution option in the simulator which will let you test your app on screens from 10" tablets to 27" displays with both widescreen and 4:3 aspect ratios.
@JohnKoerner First, you may want to try to test on the simulator with different resosulution. Depends where you are, In US, we will have some MS retail store events, you may bring your app to test in the event.
@JohnKoerner Two answers. The first is that building on WinRT gives a universal experience. Unlike, say, Android that has a fractured set of interface devices, Windows 8 is constant so you need only to test on one.
@JohnKoerner The second part of that question has to do with capabilities. It would be smart to test on a device that has the capabilities you expect to use. And on a device that does not. Since the device itself is abstracted you don't need to test all of them (again, unlike android). But testing on a good and a bad is very smart. I would also like to test on an Intel and an ARM.
@JerryNixon (though not a dev question) I wanted to know if there is a way at all to download apps I own once and copy them to my other PCs. Minesweeper is a whooping 100MB! ...and so I have a related QUESTION: is there a max size limit on how huge an app can be?
@ComFreek Well, what you can do is if your app needs to be compiled for more than one platform you can upload them all and they are presented to the user as a single app and they get the version that is right for them. Otherwise, no. You would need to package one app per app, so to speak.
@JohnKoerner If you are in US, pick a MS retail store near you and check for Windows 8 events in the store. Every store may have different schedule. This event will be a 4-5 weeks workshop to help you jump up on windows 8 development.
QUESTION @JerryNixon But to continue his question, what if one cannot all that hardware to test? I mean what if one wants to be smart but cant afford the costs?
@MamtaDalal These are the realities, are they not. There are some things you can do. The first you can do is leverage the simulator which is very robust. The second you can do is find a Windows 8 champ like @DorisChen or me and email your project to them to test. The third you can do is go deep in debt and buy a bunch of machines! There are some local options for you too. Often your local MS Store has workshops for you. Your local developer community may also have a lot of hardware among them.

@MamtaDalal It sounds to me like your local Microsoft community needs someone smart and motivated to step up and offer some leadership @MamtaDalal! Maybe that is you.
@JerryNixon @DorisChen in continuation to my earlier question about the possibility of downloading an app just once & copying it to multiple machines (because on a low-bandwidth internet connection downloading the same big app multiple times can be a pain)...... is there a suggested minimum Internet bandwidth metric that apps which use the Internet capability should have?
@mvark I am not aware if there is a minumum requirement for this. The internet should at least be good enough for any kind of download. Are you trying to test the app on different machine?
@MamtaDalal TechNet and MSDN subscribers have had the RTM install of Windows 8 for quite a while (early August). When it is public (Oct 26) the same version will be available to the public.
@JerryNixon Question: Is there a minimum level of functionality required from an app if there is no internet connection available? One of my apps reads data from a website and would be pretty useless without an internet connection. I know I will fail gracefully without a connection, but is there some level of functionality I need to provide?
@JerryNixon I already use SkyDrive - but for other files. The really BIG problem for me is that I do NOT want to change my directory structure. This is really a missing feature :(/
@JohnKoerner You probably need to handle a situation like this -- no internet. You need provide some default content, or give a warning like check your internet, etc.
@JohnKoerner Failing gracefully is a little subjective, isn't it? You have to support SnapView but have you seen the Store app handle SnapView? I guess it does. The certification requirement basically means you must not fail, you must not have an exception because there is no network connectivity. How you handle it is up to the developer and the app. It is not prescribed.
@ComFreek I was definitely thinking of keeping cached data around, but for the first startup I would not have that. I guess I will try developing with my network cable pulled for a night to see what happens :)
@JohnKoerner Another consideration is the relevance of the data. Caching stock quotes isn't going to get you any gold stars. Also, remember the first-run scenario when you simply can't have anything in cache yet. You have to handle that, too
@JohnKoerner Even if your application just went black with a message saying "Internet is required" that would technically be meeting the requirement. The user may not be impressed, I just want to reiterate that this is a developer decision.
@DorisChen I've been downloading various apps to look for ideas & best practices... i wanted to copy rather than download Minesweeper (100MB) to a different PC as I was on a low bandwidth connection. that's what made me wonder if there is a way at all to copy.....there was no proper progress indicator, just a message "Installing Microsoft Minesweeper..." ...& it took so much time I thought it hung on me....
@mvark There are two ways to install a Windows 8 app - either through the store or through side-loading. Side-loading has native support on Win RT, Win 8 Pro and Enterprise only. Windows 8 Core can be "enabled" by installing Visual Studio. As far as I know, apps from the store can not be copied and side-loaded to another PC. At least I hope not for IP sake.

@mvark The real question about those apps (including solitaire) is "why are they so big in the first place?" I am amazed at their size (considering what they do).
Any idea if there are plans to "true up" the controls/features between XAML and HTML5/JS? ie: No VariableSizedWrapGrid in HTML5/JS or the tremendous App Bar icon availability in JS vs XAML
@SoftwareDeveloper You can try listview, or CSS3 flexbox to achieve the function of VariableSizedWrapGrid in HTML5/JS. Also from XAML you can also invoke JS code.
@JerryNixon QUESTION: If I pull content from a website's API and have no control over the content, what is the correct age rating to choose for my app? I was thinking 16+. I remember reading something about an app like this being called a storefront app (or something like that)
@SoftwareDeveloper Yeah, they are not part of XAML or JS, they are just characters in the font. The font is identical in every/any language. So yes, definately

We classify those apps as either Storefront apps, whose primary function is to aggregate and sell third party media or apps, or Streaming apps, whose primary function is to aggregate and stream web-based images, music, video or other media content.

@mvark If you are using HTML/JS to develop your app, several thing you need to watch out: 1. try to get a local copy of your third party library so you can still access some WinRT content. 2. Understand the difference between web context (more in an iFrame) and local context 3. There are ways to make web context to access local context. SUGGESTION: you can build an animated splash screen for your application simply by making your app add very quickly, then having the first screen to show after the standard, static splash be identical! Then you can animate your identical screen and take your time loading the rest of your app.

SUGGESTION: Don't change the layout of your application to make room for advertisement. Instead pick an advertisement or banner that fits nicely into the data you are already presenting. This will make your application flow better and give your user a nicer experience.

Not really Windows 8 app question, but... I use the Bing Translator Text to Speech HTTP service in a few of my apps. They recently moved some Bing Translator services into azure, but I don't see the text to speech in there, only text translations... The old website is now disabled and I can't access new API keys or info about my current keys.
@mvark For a mashup application like this, understand the difference between web context (iFrame) and local context is probably the most important thing. Use my previous answer as a starting point.
@JerryNixon When submitting apps for the apptivate.ms contest, do we have to use an "Individual" account on the app store, or can we use a "Company" account?

@JohnKoerner the Apptivate contest terms and conditions currently state that only individuals are eligible for the contest, however, I don't believe that means you can't submit to the store (not to the contest) as a company - but I will have to check on this for you
