Hey all, happy holidays! I come here with a question about 403 forbidden. I have one profile on my site that always gets the "forbidden" 403 error. All other profiles fetched from database work fine except this one. I checked database and everything seems exactly the same.. Could it simply be the username of the person "apiannini"?

I add one letter to the name and profile gets a 404 page which is correct, or I change it to a valid name and it works fine. That specific username won't work.. I tried to do an exist right at the beginning of the php file for the profiles and it still gives the 403.. O.o firewall settings?

one of my co-workers said maybe it's a zend framework thing blocking /api in the profile name

site.com/apiannini shows 403 while site.com/apianninis show 404

so does that rule out the API theory in url for ZF?

403 => denied by file permissions or file policy.

Check the server error log, it may have more information. If it does, it's your web server blocking the request, not the application

@Charles Found the issue with my 403 while playing around, still going to check server logs, anything with "ini" at the end of the profile username is blocked in 403 so "hini or "charlesini" is blocked. Actually ANY page with ini as the end if blocked

..... that's stupid, why doesn't it require the "." to kick the error in.. :(

I've found how Drupal does it: have the redirection always in place (ie have the .htaccess bundled) and then check if it is function through a (synchronous) ajax call

I think it's inferior to (and basically the same idea as) the current answer of requesting the page through php though, so I don't think it's really worth adding it

While that works for Apache, it's not really going to be a thing for lighty, nginx, IIS, etc, none of which understand .htaccess.

@Charles I mentioned the .htaccess only as an example, as it works all the same for just about any redirection system here. The idea is: set it up, ajax it. If the file is requested, the system works, if it you get 404, the system doesn't work. Anything I'm missing?

There's also code.google.com/p/oauth-php but that's OAuth 1.

Roll your own. Assign interested users a token key or a HTTP authentication username & password. Combine with SSL.

@Charles ok SSL is for sure. my fear with a token key is for example our android app can be reversed compiled and the key can be revealed. or what if the token figured out somehow? or am i worrying without reason?

@8ch8ch So the idea behind oauth is for a registered, logged-in user to delegate API authority to an external application. You can emulate this by assigning each user an authentication token. The user would have to enter the token into the application somehow.

OAuth is really designed for cases where third-party applications are going to do their thing. You should still use it if it isn't a royal pain, of course.

@Charles well the user is going to login to the app with their credentials but the app is going to make the api calls to get the content. are you suggesting that when the user registers we generate a token that gets populated into the app?

Just prompt them once and then store the token instead.

@Charles so they login, i generate their token then store that in the app. then they use that key to access the api. and then i make the api require a key. which will solve the problem with hitting it from the browser.
