Anyway, I'd suggest nginx, it can definitely handle more connections than Apache. Also actively use either apc or apcu cache.

they will have difference in how one goes about configuring them, but both are playing around in same problem-domain

but it will actually depend on how shit your code is

also, at 1000 concurrent users you would have to deal with bottlenecks in DB access

@user2223410 Yes, you are. Also a potential bottleneck is/might be file-system IO operations. So you can use apcu to cache opcodes. Well, assuming your application is sane.

@AlmaDo well , user uploads a file (maybe a pdf or an image or a video) and then you have to move it to a better locations, make thumbnails, resize it, present it's attributes and let user download or stream said file

For file handling, I'd implement: php.net/manual/en/spl.files.php but remove that awful Spl thing and add interface that will be used in my code, of course.

@tereško and what's the problem? Whole structure? (I mean, kind of "too broad"). Depending of situation different solutions may be used. As for me - I used plugin (which I modified in some way for images & some office files formats) for Zend framework

@salathe I'm considering it for a very simple queueing system. Something on our servers can take up to 20 seconds to complete, and we want to provide an API to this thing of ours (geniuses). So they'll provide us an endpoint that we can post back to after the work is done (like PayPal IPN).

Do you have any advice / links given the above that I may find useful before undertaking such a task

Rabbit does its job just fine, it has served us well. The PECL AMQP extension is a bit ropey, and not documented at all but if you're (or become) familiar with AMQP then you don't really need docs.
