Now, that is slightly more interesting (because it tells me the convergens is logarithmic)

Because you're removing the 1 + 1 / from phi = 1 + 1 / phi.

It's harder to compare them if they're points or crosses.

it actually look worse. if you just plot the points, you can clear see that the odd and even series converge (likely) exponentially
